I know a few have posted their machine specs elsewhere on the board, but I figured I would still ask the question.

What are your machine specs and what do you primarily use it for?

I have three machines currently (two mini towers, one laptop)

My Primary:
Intel 865GL board -w- Intel P4 3.06 Ghz processor
1.5 GB DDR400 RAM
2 - 80 GB Western Digital WD800 hard drives
ATI Radeon 9200 AGP 128MB Video adapter
Pioneer DVR-108 DVD-RW
450 W Power Supply
In a standard Mini ATX tower.

Used for gaming and general purpose

My Secondary:
MSI mobo -w- AMD 2200+ XP processor
512 MB RAM
1- 80 GB Western DIgital WD800 hard drive
ATI Radeon 7500 AGP 64 MB Video Adapter
Pioneer DVR-107 DVD-RW
300 W Power supply
Again in a standard Mini ATX tower.
Primarily used by my oldest daughter to do homework. It was my old gaming machine.

(It is not connected to the internet)

Laptop
IBM Thinkpad T30
Intel 845 Mobile -w- 1.8Ghz Intel P4 Mobile Processor
512 MB RAM
40 GB Western Digital Scorpion hard drive
ATI Radeon 7500 Mobile video adapter (16 MB, crap)
TEAC CD/DVD combo drive
This is pretty much for working form home, email, internet, etc.

-RASPUTIN-
P4 2.6 GHz
Shuttle AB60R (i865)
2x512 Mushkin PC3200 D.C.
XFX 6600GT
WD 80GB EIDE
WD 120GB EIDE
Sony DVD+-RW
Hauppauge PVR-150
Win2k/Gentoo/Ubuntu

intended to be fulltime gentoo/reboot for win2k gaming, but we have no tv for the bedroom. therefore, pvr card goes into it and it's win2k pretty much fulltime. at least i can turn the monitor off at night instead of seeing ghostly tv glow. haven't been gaming much either, though i just bought 'stubbs the zombie'.

-ISHMAEL-
Athlon XP 2400+
ASUS A7V8X-X (Via KT400)
2x256 Hynix PC2700
Ati 8500
Quantum 40GB EIDE
WD 120GB EIDE
Lite-On CDRW
Win2k/Gentoo

used to have the mobo/proc from the media machine and was my only machine. it was fulltime win2k but i repartitioned and installed gentoo since rasputin is now somewhat inaccessible.

-MEDIA-
Athlon 1GHz
ABIT KT7A
1x512 Kingston PC133
Ati Radeon LE - TVout
Maxtor 1.2 GB
Lite-On DVD ROM
Geexbox

runs geexbox and is used for playing torrented movies and mp3 cds. geexbox is cd-based but i grabbed a small shit hd to install it on. intent was to use pvr card, upgrade HDs, and install mythtv.

ultimately, i'd like to have an SMP server (athlon m(x)p, most likely) with a hardware sata raid setup, a gaming machine (athlon64), an htpc (probably the P4 above), and a laptop (nothing too hefty, mainly portable browsing/ssh)

cracka: where'd you get your ground loop isolator? how much difference do you notice? how bad was your hum before?

p.s. extra credit: anyone ever run sw raid 5?

I'm running RAID 4 on our DB server at work. Raid 5 seems sorta inefficient with parity divided across all the drives. Seems like a liability to me.

edit: I've always been fearful of any software RAID implementation. It has to be a bottleneck.

No SW RAID 5.

Always had a RAID controller for that.

Oh shit, thanks for the reminder, I forgot to tell you about my (big-penis) server, which actually runs software RAID5. This is something I own, I won't even go into the fancy hardware we use here at school/work.

Server
2x Opteron 246
Tyan K8SD
6GB memory
36GB Atlas 15K II
3x160GB -> RAID5 (software)
2x160GB -> RAID 1 (3ware IDE card)

Runs well. RAID5 is fast, takes about 3% of one CPU.

Regarding the ground loop isolator, I got mine from Amazon:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00023XDYA/

It's $30 freaking bucks, but the humming was very, very bad, and this cleans up the sound wonderfully. Additionally, it seems to clean up some redraw artifacts in the TV image that were probably resulting from the current leakage/rebalancing. I think it's a worthwhile investment.

My hp has been near falling apart for quite a while. For a while, in Boston, it was used mainly for writing. Now that I'm at my own place again, its my primary time waster.
