I was working at the stereo factory, and Gene, famous for his jokes, both told and practical, came out of his office and said the Shuttle had just exploded. I was waiting for the punchline ("They let the Woman/Black Guy drive"), but he was serious. The rest of the morning was spent with a little B&W set showing the re-run footage over and over as we waited for it to be untrue. In the afternoon, the management bought pizzas and beers for the whole factory (80 people) and we sat around and talked, with the 30 or so of us that smoked pot outside twisting hooters and playing guitars. We all left in a dream state, unbelieving the reality of death. Here we are, all these years later, and still a dozen lives lost in space are more shocking than a thousand times that many in ground war losses.

Where were you?

I was in Middle School. We had a "guest" class in our room so we could all watch the launch on TV because Christa McAuliffe was going up. She was supposed to be transmitting science classes from space and we were going to watch them, like hundreds of other schools across the nation.

So here is a class full (in actuality, a whole school full) of kids, all glued to a television. Everyone counted along out loud with the countdown. Everyone cheered when they cleared the tower. This was really exciting!

Then something happened.

Everyone saw the explosion. We all saw the boosters fly off wildly in different directions. The classroom was completely silent. It took a few minutes for shock to wear off and for people to realize what had just happened. At this point the teacher went over and turned the television off. I think this was the absolute wrong thing to do, but I think she felt like she had to do something.

The class burst into all kids of questions and comments directed at the teacher that she had no way of being able to answer or handle. THe rest of that day was a complete waste, as the topic of every class became "What happened to the Space Shuttle?"

Looking back I guess I feel bad for the teachers and the position they were forced into. It is wierd how certain events burn themselves into our minds so that we never forget.

As a kid still at school I remember being at home when I heard the news. In my room on the old Commodore 64, or was it the Amiga, playing this cool game.

I was in third grade. I remember it was a HUGE event because of McAuliffe. They had pumped us up for weeks.

We were also watching it on television.

Later, we had a competition to design memorials. They had to be on posterboard, and each grade up to sixth had a contest for the best one. I won my grade's competition. The memorial is still up in the elementary building, framed behind glass.

In the same building is a mural by a professional artist depicting the astronauts standing together and the shuttle lifting off.

I was a senior in high school, but I had stayed home sick that day...so i watched it all day on CNN. I remember watching in horror as it exploded and feeling sorry for all the families. 4 years earlier in middle school I got to go to this space symposium. The 2 things I remembered about that event were, music being transmitted by laser and meeting and talking to 8 of the shuttle crew members, 2 of them were on challenger when it exploded, that kind of made it "real" for me...that event set back the space program immensely.

Biology class. I don't think I even knew there was a launch that day--it had really become that commonplace. Our principal announced it over the PA system, and we all prayed (Catholic school). My sister had a beauty shop nearby, so I ran there after school and watched the wall-to-wall coverage. I think I mostly watched Peter Jennings. That was a really crappy day.

I'm glad I wasn't up against tantrum.

Seriously, most looked just like that - without the explosion.

I was one some nuke sub that was in port at Roosevelt Roads Puerto Rico; taking an unscheduled tour, seeing things I should not have seen and touching things I should not have touched. The crew on board was in the mess all gathered around watching the coverage on small TV. I did not care. I was pissed I had worn a skirt and heels that day and had to climb up and down the fucking ladders showing all of my goods to the laughing gang below.

I was in 4th or 5th grade....i remember reading all the cool Natty Geo articles about the disasterous fiasco. I remember how much it really affected the nation, news coverage for days, months.
Its kinda wierd and sad how quickly the Columbia disaster has faded from the memory of America already....why with hurricanes and wars and global warming, who has time to worry about a space program that effectivley sucks up more tax dollars than any other goverment funded (that we know of) agency?

"who has time to worry about a space program that effectivley sucks up more tax dollars than any other goverment funded (that we know of) agency?"

Military: 511.2 billion

Space, energy, agriculture, housing, science, commerce, transportation, social services, justice (including prisions), general government, plus others: 179.3 billion

Space program is not even close. The big money goes to the Death Market.

I was at home after classes for the day. I called a bunch of people to get them to turn on their tv's.

The next day, I heart the first "Need Another Seven Astronauts" joke.

edit:

I got to see it live! yay!

I guess it wasn't live, but an instant replay. I only got to experience memorex history :'(
