If you've installed FasterFox -- an extension for Firefox -- upgrade it to the 1.0.2 version.

The version you probably have installed now eats lots of bandwidth in dumb ways.

It seems the older version of FasterFox, version 0.8.1 and older, does this stupid thing:

which sits in the background and silently grabs a lot of links on the site you're browsing, and caches them locally so that they'll load faster if you happen to click on that link. With sites like LinkSwarm, which have a metric fukload of links, you end up chewing up a lot of bandwidth for shit you'll never use.

It also refuses to cooperate with the webserver if the webserver asks it to chill.

It also is fuking broken.

I'm sitting here playing with the older version (which they shouldn't even make available anymore) and it not only grabs the same links on each pageload -- which is dumb enough, cause the point is to use the cached version, not keep asking for a copy to cache -- it grabs some of them more than once per pageload. See that "increases load to webservers" bit? It is telling the truth. The developers should have chosen wiser defaults. I hesitate to call them monkey-fucking jerk-heads... but not really.

The new version, which I can only assume is the direct result of a lot of pissed-off website operators, is much cooler.

It turns off the pre-fetching by default, so you have to turn it on. Here's how.

You get to this dialog by going Tools > Extensions > Fasterfox. I've enabled "Enhanced Prefetching" and added google.com to the "do not prefetch" list. If you want, you can add linkswarm.com, but this new version plays nice, and this shouldn't be necessary. If you frequent other sites that aren't giant cash-bleeding commercial entities, you may want to toss their domain in there, as the operators may not be aware of this crap. It'd also be real swell of you to crank the settings down to at least "Optimized." I thought the whole prefetching thing went the way of the 56k modem, but apparently I'm wrong.

Luckily, imageshack is being a faggot right now, so those images may not load for you. If you need help with any of this, email me and I'll hook you up.

Remember kids, upgrade that barf!

THANKS FAGS!

I installed it, added linkswarm.com to the 'do not prefetch links which contain' list.

Did this have anything to do with the site cocking up a few days ago?

Please explain why....
When I clicked on the upgrade it and then clicked on the Install Fasterfox 1.0.2 and the little download box pops up....
It comes from mozdev.oregonstate.edu
and then when I clicked cancel and clicked on download again... it comes from ftp.iasi.roedu.et
and then again from devlib.org
and then again from mozdev.ellipt.fr

I am am not real smart about this stuff and rather wary about downloading something that has an ever changing site address.

It just has different mirrors to distribute the load, I would suspect

The Mozdev site w/ the xpi info isn't hosting the file; they're linking to the server that is (or they are hosting the file and the changing URLs are their way of organizing all the files on their server). When you click cancel and redo it, it links up to another server that has the file. You're downloading the actual file from the ftp.whatever link which changes when you redo it.

I COULD BE SO WRONG I'M RIGHT WHO KNOWS LOL!

never mind why you were clicking cancel

aha! the insector founds the culprit! Prefetching faggotry!!

I had installed fasterfox, then thought about what the hell good it did, and promptly uninstalled it.

It actually increased my pageload times since it was busy fuckin around with prefetching shit.

Anything with a bulging bicep should be considered faggotry beyond merit.

I think it didn't help any. I think the main reason for that was the site getting bombarded by an unusually high number of aggressive referer spammers.

magicchex: except that pipelining does make a difference

From my spot-check reading this morning, it looks like the pipelining settings in Firefox shouldn't hurt anything. It doesn't open up X persistent connections to the webserver (bad), but rather slipstreams a bunch of requests inside a single connection (not bad). It might put a little extra load on the server, but nothing we should notice.

That's easy enough..

Link of contemptousness

Seriously though, about:config and pipelines and max connections...

And I had already set it before the fester fox...

so did i, and after installing fasterfox i noticed it was simply adjusting things i had already adjusted by hand.

it's not a horrible install for someone that's not comfortable adjusting about:config by hand though.

I think that different cacheing methods that claim to make your connection faster or your web experience faster are a bunch of assholes trying to fool the computer illiterate. SO I don't use any of them. I don't wanna hog bandwidth, unless I'm stealing something. So I don't use those download shit faster apps. I have DSL at home and T1 at work. If speed was still and issue I'd go shit myself.
