I saw Rusted Root in Syracuse NY last night. It was a general Admission show(which I prefer). I was pleasantly surprised to find out that Magic Hat Beer was sponsoring the show and when we got into the venue, which was a very large convention hall, there was at least 6 bar stands selling a wide variety of adult beverages including Magic Hat products. I indulged in quite a few Blind Angels while teh weif emptied many a cup of #9.
There was between 700 - 1000 fans in attendance and all were eagerly awaiting the band. At about 8:20pm the band appeared on stage with its very stripped down ambiance. The Lead singer played an accoustic guitar all night, the bass player was ripping all nigth on his 5 string bass. There was a drummer in full kit and a fellow playing bongo's and other percussion. Besides the Lead singers powerful and distinctive voice, the two accompanying female singers offered beautiful but sometimes erie harmony.
They started the night with with the familiar "Send Me on My Way" and moved on to songs from their latest CD. I found myself intrigued by the new offerings and at one point was almost enticed to buy it on the way out the door. The two hours they played felt like twenty minutes. By moving back between new songs and old faithfuls the band never lost the crowd.
The encore ripped with a solo by the Lead singer followed up by the band rejoining him for a highly spirited "Ecstacy"
I have not seen Rusted Root in quite a while and I would say that they have matured into a very tight, very professional band who gives a tremendous effort even on a cold snowy Syracuse night with a show played the night before and anothe show down the road the next night.

I've seen them 4 times over the last 3 years. I am always amazed that they put the same songs on all their albums, because they have soo frikin many songs.

I've tried and tried to become a fan or at least tolerant of Rusted Root over the years (mostly because so many girls like them) with little success. I think possibly if you ripped the members out of the band they are individually talented but I just can't get behind their sound as a whole.
I caught the Beneveto Russo Duo with special Guest Mike Gordon for New Years and I was quite impressed with the show. I doubt there will be very many more shows with Mike but if they come through town I would suggest checking them out.

I liked that one single they had out, mostly because I too like David Byrne's singing.
