I intend on purchasing a new video card around Xmas and have been doing a little shopping around. My attention has been taken by this new Radeon 9700. It is supposed to be the greatest thing going. The release is in about a month or so. I refuse to believe that Nvidia is being outdone by that much. I have heared rumblings about a Nvidia NV30 but have been unable to find any solid specs on it yet. So my question is as follows: Is the best thing on the market the Radeon 9700 or does anyone know of what Nvidia has up its sleave? Or am I on the wrong track entirelly and there is another card that outdoes the Radeon? TEACH ME....SHOW ME THE LIGHT....LEAD ME DOWN THE PATH OF VIDEO CARD RIGHTEOUSNESS.... I AM SPARTICUS....NO NEW TAXES....I HAVE A DREAM....and all of that....

Right on man... the r300 radeon 9700 is going to be one rockin card. All n all.. ATi is making the best vid card out there. I started off with a voodoo3000 moved to nvidia, then on to the radeon and it is impressively better. ATi has one me over with all the features that they include on the card. You get to the point where you want a card that can rock 2d as well as the 3d... video, dual heads, and all that fun stuf. PLUS.. from what i hear, the 9700 will have complete onboard mpeg encode/decoding. So.. all those dvds will rock house for you. Hopefully chris sees this thread and can add more to it.. he is the demo programmer for ATi and sees all the newest technology that they make for us. |

Mathius, long time no see. You are still tight with your God, I assume?
Yeah, our pal and fevered MR admin Chris has got the definite ATI info hookups. I, too, am looking for a video card and he suggested the 7500 as a budget idea, or getting the 9000, which is apparently all the goodness of the 8500, only with the silicon 'respun' and thus far less complex and costly.
But as for the 9500, only he and your God can say. |

i think you first need to define what your usage is going to be.
i have an ati radeon le, which is somewhat shitty now. i game a little and it don't do too bad, i can tell it strains, though. the tv out worked very well until i got a component dvd player, too. i'm happy and thinking about going with ati again in the near to distant future.
i was thinking about getting into video encoding, using my maya demo, and stuff with an aiw 8500. i know there are driver issues everyone complains about with ati but i honestly think a lot of people have their eyes closed and a thumb up their ass when installing these things.
one thing i'm definitely going to keep in mind is doom III. oh yes, i am hardly ever geeky, but i'll probably arrange a sick day the day on or after its release.
anyway, i was looking at pc gamer's review of the gainward ultra 650 xp, which it a gf4 ti 4200 for $200 and it looks pretty sweet. they gave it a 95% rating as well. the 750 looked a little expensive to me, although it has some pretty phatty features ($380 / 93%).
i heard rumors that the ati 9000 isn't as beefy as the 8500. but i don't know anything substantial about that.
my personal choices would be to buy the gainward 650 if doom III came out today. but in time, i think i'd lean more toward an 8500 or 9700. then again, this is me not being familiar with the ati prices...
* the 8500 aiw is around $200 at newegg.com so i would probably look at it as also being an immediate potentiality.

DOOM III is teh yum. I hope it works and works well with ATI's latest cards, cause I plan on getting either the 7500 or the 9[0,5]00. For <$150, how can you go wrong?

i believe i read somewhere that carmack praised ati's stuff and used it as an example of the tech that would really make dIII shine. |

Here is one of many links that makes comments on the 9700s ability to handle Doom III....at high reslolutions....with all effects on high. No small feat I assure you.

http://www.megagames.com/news/html/hardware/carmacksaysnogeforce4-mxfordoom.shtml
John Carmack, id Software's lead programmer of Doom fame, has lashed out at nVidia for the release of GeForce4.
Any public comment from such an influencial figure, which contains the phrase "Do not buy a GeForce4-MX for Doom" is worth a closer look. According to Carmack ATI 8500 support for Doom is complete and "GF4-MX will still run Doom properly, but it will be using the NV10 codepath with only two texture units and no vertex shaders. A GF3 or 8500 will be much better performers."

I told everyone that I was going to demonstrate Doom III on the best hardware, and there has been no collusion or kickbacks or anything like that going on. Our objective is the technical merit The new ATI card was clearly superior.
