Ever see Wayne’s World?
I thought it was hilarious, like during this one scene where Wayne starts to play the white strat in the music store and the manager cuts him off and points to a “NO STAIRWAY” sign, fuck that was funny.
Do you know why it was funny, because everyone who frequents guitar stores knows that this is a universal constant, for every 10 dudes that pick up a guitar, 3 of them will lapse into the fucking same few bars of stairway. It’s funny because the dude behind the counter has done what every single one of his real life counterparts wish they could do.
You are that greasy repetitive skidmark playing Led Zeppelin's anthem over and over (not all of you, and you smarter ones have probably figured this out by now). And I fucking hate what you have done to what used to be a cool song.
Has anyone else noticed the shitslide around here lately? This place has gone from the coolest web community on the planet, to a playpen full of retards.
A lot of the coolest members hardly post any more, why do you figure that is? I would gladly trade qwerty and sfw to get Madturk back and posting more. For instance DR^3, yazarian, relli, gothmog and metatron hardly utter a fuking meep, and I don’t buy for a minute the “I’m busy” excuse, if those dudes really wanted to post more, they would.
This place has quickly become a wall for monkeys to throw shit at, the same dudes circle-jerking the same fuking joke over and over again. The more enterprising fagmos crayola shit all over the place in the vain hope that the proliferation of their shit, across a wider surface, will intensify the whole “look at the funny shit I can do” experience, it sucks. And when you call them on it, they get indignant, hang from a branch with one set of prehensile toes, reach into their ass and pelt you.
I know Vas has to deal with your stupid drama at least once a week, and he fuking hates it. He fucking hates that some people are so unaware of their own selves that he has to fuking hint at the fact that they are being a douche, with hopes that they would realize this and undouchify themselves. I know that he would rather party with you fukkrs, than follow you around with a mop and clean your mess.
So I ask you 2 things:
How long can LS last in its current state?

Depending on how you think about it, there is an inverse relationship in a particular direction; ie cool people contribute cool shit, or cool shit attracts cool people. That being said, I happen to take the not-so-popular stance that the AQ is not fagging up the front page. I know that Clavis (for one) will probably poop down my neck for that sentiment, but I can explain. How often do we see "whacky news" links? I think that I see them come through the AQ quite a bit. They're usually Fark-level faggy horseshit about a stripper punching a customer, for instance. El oh el. Sometimes they're worthwhile if they're especially depraved, but generally no. I only bring that up as one example of shit. And at some point there was quite a bit of bitching that the AQ was rejecting too much, and in my opinion, it went from (arguably) too picky to suddenly not picky. I think the quality had been down for a while, and I think it had been attracting the wrong kind of person.
Frankly, I think the type of shit that scares off the stupider and more worthless posters is serious discussion or good content. Idiots love it when the new "All Your Base" parody comes out, but they don't know what to think when they see pictures of dead Iraqi civilians burned by white phosphorous and an accompanying argument over the geopolitical ramifications of chemical warfare.
I think if you want people to stop shitting in your backyard, make your backyard better. I feel as though maybe there's just too much talk of what specifically is wrong with no solution offered, and I don't know how helpful that is. |

As much as I enjoy monkeys and throwing shit at the wall, I agree with you, LK. I miss the days when rejects were light, and the link content on the site was truly entertaining. It's not that the same entertainment isn't there anymore, because it is. It's just that there's so much shit you have to wade through that it almost isn't worth it. Every week it's some new whore, spamcock, political asshat, or moron that decides to shit LS up. There was a time when people would just lurk for awhile and then quietly slip into the flow of LS regulars. There's plenty of options to solve this, some easy (people stop being assholes and it's enforced by permabanning) and some difficult (programming to keep the spam/assholes at arms length). I don't know what would work, but I hope it happens soon.

Here I am thinking everything is hunkey dorey and it turns out that our community has gone to shit. Damn it. I'm always the last to know. However, there are ALOT of links to wade through these days. But I guess that comes with being a kewl roxxors site from heaven. As far a people. I think everybody's fine. I mean "There are no feelings on the internetz" (vas) right? Oh well.
Anyways, I never play stairway at the guitar store. I check out the 2nd octave blues scale to make sure everything intonates correctly all the way up the fret board. Then I play a couple blues rifs/sweet bends to make sure that I could bend a full two steps and still stay in tune. Alot of strats that have two saddles on the head have problems with this. Which means if a bend pushed it out o tune then the tremmlo bar will mos def kill your solo.

Let me just begin by saying I agree with you somewhat, LK. More importantly, I am disappointed to hear that the admins of this site are so dismayed at the direction this LS is going. I still receive great enjoyment from Linkswarm. Which may or may not point to the fact that I am one of the ones contributing to the shitslide. I suggest that you be more specific in your criticisms and possibly offer solutions. Right now this is sounding like a boss, barrel-assing it into the office and yelling at his employees to shape up or ship out—then storming out again…perhaps this is your intent. But I believe in order to begin to solve this very real problem, we need to start by getting explicit about what or who we don’t like. This was a good start. As it stands now, people may not really know where to go with this. As leaders of this community, it is up to you to take the lead by identifing the problems and implementing structures and rules to combat them. I too long for the days on LS when things were simple but maybe it's time we accept the fact that Linkswarm is destined for greater prospects than we have imagined...that is, if we can figure out where to go from here.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but "the shitslide" is a topic for discussion on IRC quite frequently. Those of us who don’t frequent IRC often are at somewhat of a disadvantage. We have not been privy to the opinions there. Also I am very interested to hear what some older members like DR^3, yazarian, Madturk, relli, metatron, etc. have to say.

Actually, I think I might. One of the things that first attracted me to linkswarm was its lack of moderation. People weren't just banned willy-nilly for minor (or major) infractions like some other sites did and still do. Unfortunately as we've seen, some people have taken advantage of this to spread utter shit around without fear of anything other than harsh words. Maybe now is the time to implement a harsher style of moderation. If no one wants to be the bad guy and start deleting shit or banning people, I'm more than willing to, if it will help.

I suggest that you be more specific in your criticisms and possibly offer solutions.
I wanted to avoid this, doing so would just incite some more poop flinging among members that were put under the spotlight. Every hack that has picked up a guitar has been playing Stairway for since the 70's. As a working journeyman bass player
since that time, I've had to endure playing it 1/2 doz. times in a row, in some gawd awful basement, or garage while these hacks tried to outdo each other. Yeah, I was even in a Zeppelin clone band for a while. The excess of that one beautiful song drove me crazy, to the point where I shut the radio off. Permanently!
BUT, that's not your point.
As a relatively new member, and I know people cringe when they see I've replied in their threads, I do have something's to offer, sometimes.
For instance right now.
Rules. I've seen this topic come up before, and it was never really taken a shine to by the old guard, so I've come up with a compromise. "The Un-Written Rules of Linkswarm" to be posted as a sticky in the noob posting pit. Believe me, the rules exist, even though they aren't posted. I've broken every single one of them. Not intentionally mind you, but as one alpha pointed out when I first got here, I was like someone that had found the wonders of e-mail. (Crackalackin' I think)
I hate to use myself as an example, but even though I didn't make LK's trade roster, I think that I'm an example of what he's getting at. My only edge is that, I eventually let things sift into my thick-head, not like some of the people I've seen come here "specifically" to throw shit at the walls.
Vas is online everyday, not like what I see in other sites. At times I'm sure he suffers from "Octopus Syndrome" being pulled
in eight different directions at once. Not because he doesn't have control of the site, but because of the "drama" that comes from listening to every single whiner. My hat's off to his tolerance.
That being said, we're here to explore our options, thanks to this thread.
The nature of Linkswarm is such that it will always build on it's membership base. "The Un-Written Rules" would serve as a guideline to people like me, who strive to undouchify, and strive to contribute better quality links to the site. It also acts as a lever for the bigstick suggestion by Gothmog.(permabannings) [ You had the chance to read what we expect here in the "Un-Written". You fucked it up]
Most importantly, it would be an asset to noobs before the shitslide, allowing them to be better members, and I think that what LK, and others really want.

I love the swarm. I look up to a lot of the persons who frequent it. Including Clav, LK, SexNJ, Vas, BeachGoat, Ghostie, Hobo, Dumbskull, Hellkat... etc adnauseum... I enjoy reading the posts and surfing the content. I'm glad that the swarm exists. I visit it every day. I never miss a morning swarm update. Ever.

I found that I couldn't fit in very well and I stopped contributing. I did this because it isn't any fun gettting body slammed by mods almost everytime you post... (or at perhaps I'm jusy an overly sensitive fag, whatever) but I also did it because it was quite obvious to me that I am not capable of understanding exactly HOW to help make the swarm better. I'm just a guy that doesn't fucking get it. Just like some of the asshats that post here everyday.
Now, this ain't a fucking pity post. My reason for posting is simple: It sucks that the best persons on this site feel so crappy about the state of this site. I don't get it, I love this place.
I wasn't around in the old days, so maybe that explains things. Maybe it was way cooler here before I started reading.
I may have my retarded personal conflicts with some of the people here, and I'll admit, they're mine ...but I don't like hearing the guys at the top predicting the death of the swarm. I don't understand why they feel things are so bad.
Anyway, I'll go back to my hole and shut the fuck up.

Right. I think banning is a definate option we need to look at, though. I was just playin devil's fag-vocate.
There are contributions of self -indulgence and then there are contributions that aim to make the community better. After a period of time it becomes fairly clear what a member is all about. Could we institute probationary periods for members who are deemed worthy of banning? Maybe the admins and such could form a "jury" which could vote on members who seemingly suck. It would be alot of work and writng this is already making me feel WAY too cop/nazi-ish. But maybe the time has come?
Not my intent at all.
Understood. There's nothing wrong with wanting this site to be the best it can be-- I'm behind that 666%, cowboy.
