My mom wrote out a grocery list today and on it was "a jug of Purex".
Do people not in the Southern United States say jug?

Also, how do you say syrup?
I thought it was pronounced "sur-rup" until I hit junior high.

PLEASE TELL ME JUG IS NOT STRICTLY A HILLBILLY TERM.

I say jug. Jug of milk, jug of wine, Emmet Otter's Jugband Christmas.

I guess it's probably not a real common term in the North.

Also, how the hell do you say syrup now? SEEER-up? Me, I say sur-rup, like a non-homophile.

I say seerup. I'm from southern california.

And jugs are bottles down here, no matter how big they are. Some times we say container.

Technically its a jug, however I rarely speak of detergent, so I have no idea what I would say. Probably "a thing of purex" or simply, "some purex."

As for syrup... SIH-rup ? I guess.

You're probably all hillbillies.

I went to Hawaii last summer--people their didn't use the term "shower" --they called a shower a "bath" instead.

I call the gadget that controls my TV a remote control. I've heard it called a clicker. Clicker people are dead to me.

I say bottle of Purex. The only thing that comes in jugs is moonshine.

Sur-rup still.
Sometimes it slips and I end up and make it one syllable. (Surp).

People from New Jersey pronounce orange "ARNje." It sounds hideous.
I say "SIR-up" like a normal human, but I've been made fun of for that.
Some people call the beach "the shore," but then some people make fun of those people and say that they're "bennies." They don't actually know the meaning of bennies, but they always think it's something to do with touristy types.
Admittedly, I used to say "hella," as in, "There were hella people there." That is far less stupid than what people say in Southern California: a grip. Like, "I ate a grip of fries." Retarded.
Most people know that "Worcester" is "Wooster," but how about "Schulkyll"? It's "SKOO-kul" Stupid Pennsylvanians.
When I was little, we said "clicker," now it's "remote," and I've heard "channel changer" and some other equally unwiedly terms.
Soda. Not pop.
Some people say eggs, some people say "aygs".

Because Chapel Hill is so completely overrun with Northern transplants, the result is a bland non-dialect english which really has no unique inflections of any kind.

75% General American English
15% Yankee
10% Dixie
0% Midwestern
0% Upper Midwestern

This is a pretty inaccurate survey but I think it catches the general flavor of my speech. That is to say, bland.

It's a bottle of Purex and SEAR-UP with my pancakes.

And since I'm from Wilkes-Barre, I park my car in the "parkade," not the parking garage. When I go to Penn State games, I drive west on Rude 80. And when I leave a room in my aunt's house in Pittston, she tells me to "close the light."

I have a friend from a Nigerian (lol) family, and instead of "turn it up" she says "loud it up." Instead of "turn it down" she says, "low it down." The fuck?

nocal: People from New Jersey pronounce orange "ARNje." It sounds hideous.

That's South-Jersey. It's different, and it doesn't count. I say OR-ange.

Some people call the beach "the shore," but then some people make fun of those people and say that they're "bennies." They don't actually know the meaning of bennies, but they always think it's something to do with touristy types.

Since I am from the NJ shore, I'll handle this. In NJ the beach is the Shore. Bennies is derived from the names of the following cities: Bayonne, Elizabeth, and Newark, who used to be the worst tourist-assholes at the shore. They've since had their throne usurped by New Yorkers, who the term now applies to. It specifically means a NYer who is a dick and spends his summer polluting the shore and crowding our bars, boardwalks and eating establishments (and then goes home and talks about how shitty the state he spends his whole summer is).

We normally want Bennies to "go home." We have bumper stickers to that effect.

Anyone who does not know this is not from the NJ Shore.

Also, shore isn't the de-facto NJ term for beach. We usually say, "I'm going to the beach," but you would say, "I am from the Jersey shore." Shore == Coast, not Beach.

Most people know that "Worcester" is "Wooster," but how about "Schulkyll"? It's "SKOO-kul" Stupid Pennsylvanians.

I still say SHY-kill AND WOR-CHESTER. I have gone to school in both areas. Fuck them.

Soda. Not pop.

Or, just simply, "Coke." To refer to all brown and fizzy beverages.

Some people say eggs, some people say "aygs".

South Jersey again. They also say "Wooder" instead of Water and "Jimmies" instead of Sprinkles and "Hoagie" instead of "Sub"

South Jersey is usually wrong. They suck.

When I was young, we had an old Zenith console T.V. with a "clicker". It made a god-awful loud popping noise when you pressed the buttons.

I have never heard of a redneck saying pop. On the other hand, with you saying "yall" and "tawlk", it sure does sound like you might be the redneck in this situation.

So don't be a niger about it and let's all get along.

I speak 3 english languages.

My east'in accent: That's when I want to drink beeah at the bahh.

My south western accent: I'll take a sack fer my purrchases. I drink beerrr in a barrr.

My drunk accent: I had tons of fucking beer cunt, stop fucking asking to buy that bottle of shit for the laundry I'll never do. Did you do something with yer hair, cause you're sorta ugly all of a sudden.

Gallon of milk, bottle of soda, tub of butter, the remote, sneakers, rotaries (roundabouts for you momo's), liqour stores are called "packi's", movies are called flicks, caramel not carmel, getah not guitar, sacks not bags, spydiz not spiders.
