A 19-year-old wearing a black cape, helmet and paintball mask went on a shooting rampage Saturday in this upscale Southern California neighborhood, killing a man and his daughter before committing suicide, authorities said.
William Freund, 19, left his home about 9 a.m. and drove less than 100 yards to a house, where he shot and killed 22-year-old Christina Smith and her 45-year-old father Vernon Smith with a shotgun, said Orange County Sheriff's Department spokesman Jim Amormino.
A 20-year-old man, who was the brother and son of the victims, also was in the house. He fled from the gunman and ran out the back of the house after hearing the shots, Amormino said.
After leaving the house, Freund walked across the street and fired into another house, Amormino said. A person inside suffered cuts from broken glass.
Another neighbor then walked outside and was confronted by Freund, who tried to fire his weapon, Amormino said. When it misfired, Freund returned to his own house and committed suicide, he said.
Authorities said the motive was unknown and there was no known link between Freund and the victims.
"It may have been random," Amormino said.
Neighbor Katherine Anderson, 15, said Freund and victim Christina Smith went to Aliso Miguel High School together, but she didn't think they had any other relationship.
Anderson said her older brother had given Freund a ride to school several times and described him as "a real quiet guy."
She also said the Smiths were known for their holiday decorations. They put up multiple Christmas trees each season and filled their bay window with a snow village.
"Every holiday it's like that, especially for Christmas," said Anderson, who lives around the corner from the victims' house "They were really nice people."
Other neighbors said Freund would sit in front of his house and play guitar for hours at a time.
The murders happened as students at Aliso Miguel High School prepared for homecoming Saturday night.
Police tape blocked off much of the large subdivision in the hills above Aliso Viejo, a wealthy section of south Orange County where median home prices exceed $600,000.
Built in 1995, the neighborhood of mostly beige two-story homes was quiet Saturday afternoon, with people washing their cars and children in Halloween costumes playing in the street.
People who lived in the neighborhood described it as a family community where residents often socialized.
"For this neighborhood, it's shocking," said 33-year-old resident Ian Brown.

On October 19, he asked for references to a mental hospital and said he needed counseling and training in social skills. He also wrote that he wished he had some friends -- emphasizing it with 75 exclamation points.

Asperger Syndrome

Real violence is relatively rare among Asperger's sufferers. Poor socialization skills does sometimes lead to frustration, tantruming or "acting out," but an act like this is very unusual. I think it's more likely that his meds were fuked up, or he went off of them.
On a side note, I was impressed by the evenhandedness and sincerity of the SA crowd. I wonder what it would have happened if he had wandered into the LS forums?
