What's awesome and weird is that I was thinking a couple days ago that I should start a forum thread with the same topic. GREAT!! I bought an acoustic Fender a few years back and quickly became unmotivated because I didn't sound like Rock Hudson or whoever, right away.
Thanks for the info, I think I can start out with a little more focused now and start to sound like I have AIDS with the quickness. |

i would always recommend and acoustic first.
you build strength, stamina, callouses etc. then when you go to electric it's easier. if you go to acoustic from electric, it's like harder and you're sort of starting from the beginning.
check out a gripmaster:
http://www.bodytrends.com/gripmast.htm
you build up strength and dexterity etc. while walking around, or on the subway etc.

Some good advice:
When your fingers hurt a week or so into heavy playing, don't bitch and don't give up. It goes away. Most people quit when their fingers start to hurt. Most people are big pussies, with flowers for hands and a fuzzy pink bunny wabbit for a head. Do not be like most people.

I played cello for the last eight years. Finger calluses won't be a problem, esp on the left hand.
Also, I did not go to the pwnshop today, as there was an overtime football game that had to be seen (Cal v Oregon.)

Update:
Still have not been to a pawnshop, due to general lack of time + lots of goins' on this weekend.
Good news is I have a bit more money than I expected, total guitar funds = $700 = one month rent.
Anyway, I think I'm going to get a Fender Strat, either wine red or cream or sunburst. I'm getting one because they're generally considered pretty good and they're fairly cheap and all my favorite guitarists played one except Jimi Page.
Now I NEED to know, what's a good amp? Is it worth shelling out extra $ for the Marshall Amp with reverb? Is reverb even that good? Everybody says it's good. I'm also considering a fender amp with reverb.
Fender strat --> $350 or less
Amp --> can spend up to $150
Anything else I need?
Also, is it worth going through the on-line biznass or is it better to buy in store?

Dude, I say take a day and go to guitar and pawn shops around your area. You already have a knowledge of the instrument, so just take some time to sit in a couple of places and play around on different equipment. Shit, I do that just for fun on an off day! You might find a Hughes and Ketner or a Vox or Peavy or a Les Paul or an Ibanez, a strat, tele or jag... Point being: fuck around. Your ear is completely different from those of the people who are telling you what you should buy, so give yourself some time to listen for what you like.
Happy Hunting!

I ended up getting a Fender Standard Stratocaster, White, and a cheapo Kustom amplifier.
Pricing (tax included and rounded a bit)
Fender Standard Strat - $360
Cheapo Amp -$65
Bag + Stand - $50 (turned out to be a lot, surprisingly)
picks - $1.00
Strap - $5.00
Cable for amp - $7.00
Total - $488
$12 UNDER BUDGET! WOOO!
A lot of people gave the advice to get my guitar used, but I basically made the decision that I wanted a white fender, because it looks cool, and I wanted a new one because I don't know enough about guitars to not get screwed buying a used one, and I want a nice guitar so I won't regret buying a piece of shit guitar in 2 years time, assuming I'm still playing then.
I got a cheapo amp because I have roommates that generally sleep at night and such, so I just need something to put my headphones into.

I've never played before, so if anybody knows any good on-line reference sites, that'd be helpful. I just got the amp and guitar together today, and I haven't really practiced, just fooled around looking up easy tabs for shit like Smoke on the Water.
It's a lot of fun.

Dinozoa, I'm taking it from the post thus far that you only want to become a guitarist, not a musician.
If I'm not wrong, then buy the Ultimate Fake Book - it's 1200 songs condensed like frozen orange juice into a single book. You don't have to have much musical background to "fake" most of the songs in this book - most are 1-4-5 songs, which will probably be what you want to start out with after you learn your chords.
Either way, take a look at a keyboard/piano some time before you start messing with your chords. It will help you understand the organization of the diatonic scale, which will make learning any sort of Western music easier. (Not Country-Western, I mean non-Japan, non-India. Think major and minor scales, CDEFGABC.)
Welcome to the world of music. |

Get the Amazing Slow Downer.
It is a program that slows down songs to the point where you can listen to them note for note and pick out what it going on, but it maintains the same pitch.
A lot of tab online is crap, but I do recommend you learn tab. I've been playing for 11 years, and I've never read music, only tab.

It's funny how you were able to use assumptions you pulled out of your ass to patronize me real good.
I played the piano for about 8 years as a kid, before I got sick of it and switched to the cello, which I've been playing for about the last 8 years.

Thanks for the interest.
I got the guitar and amp on Wednesday, and since then I've practiced at least an hour a day. Each practice is a chromatic scale, up and down a couple of times, the first time slow and then faster the other times, and then practicing the D, G, and C major chords, and then playing a couple of songs like Jet Airplane by John Denver, that only have those three chords. I usually end by looking up tabs on the internet for stuff I really can't play except maybe the intro, like Speed Trials by Elliott Smith, or Smoke on the Water by Deep Purple. I got the lesson outline from http://guitar.about.com/library/weekly/aa071200e.htm, and if I knew how to make a link I would.

So I guess I've been playing for 9 months now, and I like to think I'm pretty good for somebody who has been playing for 9 months. I've definitely gotten to the point where practicing is usually the high point of the day, in terms of fun. So much fun, I've decided to get an acoustic guitar.
I've checked out some stores in Berkeley, and there're two acoustics for under $500 that really stand out from the rest, a Martin, which sounds great, but seems shady because it has a fiberglass back and neck, although I guess that makes it more durable, and an all-wood guitar made by bredsmith or something like that, I can't remember, but it's like a guitar microbrewery or something, I found it used in a local store. Before I go plunk my money down, I was wondering if anybody else has any really good tips for picking out an acoustic.
Also, because this forum is also kind of a place where people are sharing practicing tips and stuff:
I hear the best way to get very good at guitar is to take a year off from jobs and stuff and spend all day every day smoking pot and playing guitar. The pot will calm you down and make you think you sound better, and give you the patience to play all day long.

I happen to know that neither of you are the greatest guitarists in the world. I know this because I am a professional musician and recording engineer (no shit), and I have met the greatest guitarist in the world. His name is Dan. The New York Times once described him as "...four of the five greatest players ever."
I play the guitar, although I am certainly not the greatest by any stretch of the imagination. Also not the greatest, but passable on keys, bass, woodwinds, reeds, brass, etc etc...
I am however, the best drummer in the world. Ever. No shit.
