So you've probably heard all the stories about the desperate military recalling retired soldiers, rectuiting by giving away $3 worth of iTunes music, and allowing those without a GED into the army. Here at my college, we have the second strongest naval ROTC presence in America. Still, this morning I got this email:
THIS IS AN OFFER FOR EMPLOYMENT IN THE UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS.
My name is Captain James Finnegan. I am the Marine Corps Officer Selection
Officer here in Philadelphia. The reason that I'm mailing you is because I
want you to be aware of an awesome summer training program called the
Platoon Leader's Course (PLC).
This summer course is either 6-weeks for freshmen and sophomores, or
10-weeks for juniors and seniors and is available to all qualified college
undergraduates.
If you are an American citizen, a full-time enrolled student, and found to
be medically and physically fit, then you may be eligible to participate in
the PLC program.
This program will benefit you in many ways:
1. You will attend what Inc. magazine calls "the best management training
program in America",
2. You will earn approximately $2400 (six weeks) or $4000.00 (ten weeks),
plus room and board during the training.
3. If you are interested in aviation, have 20/40 vision or better, and
decide to accept your commission, you will go down to Pensacola, FL and
train to fly some of the most advance tactical aircraft in the world. The
Marine Corps is the only branch that will guarantee you a pilot seat as
early as your freshmen year.
4. You will not incur any obligation to the Marine Corps, even after
completing the training (You can choose whether or not to continue with the
program).
5. Tuition assistance will be available to you after you complete your
summer training. You could potentially earn $8,000 to $25,000 for school,
depending on your graduation date.
6. This program does not interfere with academic or athletic pursuits
because your training is conducted during the summer.
7. This is not ROTC. No on-campus training, drills or meetings
If you successfully complete Officer Candidates School, you will be on your
way to becoming a Marine Corps Lieutenant, with an exciting job after
college. Marine lieutenants receive starting salaries of $40,000-49,000 a
year plus incredible benefits.
This is an unparalleled opportunity to see if you have what it takes to be a
leader in one of the most elite organizations in the world without
committing yourself to service. If you are interested in attending a top

Kinda funny, a ARMY recruiter just called me 3 days ago on my cell phone while i was at work. He identified himself as a recruiter and started asking me questions...i cut him off and asked him to take me off his calling list. It was pretty surreal. Knowing that if i agreed to meet him and signed just a few papers....my entire life would change, made me rather uncomfortable. Oh, and my eyesight is 20/10. I can see at 20 feet what folks with 20/20 can see at 10 feet. Im cool. Envy me.

i took the ASVAB to get out of three periods in high school. i think a lot of people did that. afterward, i head some better-grade-students-than-i kids discussing the test. one dude's like 'so what'd you put for the third prong on an outlet, is that the negative?'
SIGH.
the military called me constantly. i was pretty courteous, but i didn't realize i was doing myself a disservice that way. i finally just snapped and said 'because i hate authority' and said something about not wanting to die for a government i don't support. they stopped calling then. i think i got one trailer about a year later.
lesson: do not respond to recruitment in any way.

I chose the NAVY because it was the least likely one to die in. Now I have the V.A. Loan option but shit is so expensive out here it isn't worth shat. So it was all for nothing. Except for that hooker in Dubai. w00t!

Heh i can understand the avoiding of the marines, ive seen two close friends come home from Afghanistan hurt badly. Thats my reasons for going navy. But im also in the philadelphia recruiting district and those marine guys are nuts def dont listen to em, talk you up full of shit and none of its there. My boy was promised infrantry school, which the dumbass wanted but he got sent to school to drive humvees.......kid never drove a car in his life before then.......now hes back home and cant see outta his left eye after a roadside bomb demolished his humvee.......The navy atleast guarentees your school before you even leave the processesing and testing center. Oh yea and again only ppl in the navy that are dying over there are SEALs, and corpsmen....... |

I've been in the marines for a year now. And I still have 6 months of schooling left before I can actually do my job. Waiting around sucks, and the stupid bullshit sucks worse. All in all, probably the worst decision i've made in my life. I just did it to get chicks, and then once I was in I realized that marines suck, and everybody hates them.

My decision to join the Navy was similar to Acidburn's with some family history mixed in.
Since I initiated contact with the recruiters and knew exactly what my my intentions were, I got the job I wanted and all of the duty stations I wanted. My recruiter didn't lie to me, not because they didn't want to ro try, but because I didn't give them the opportunity. My recruitment process took close to 6 months, and I am sure those fukers were happy once I actually left for boot camp.
Funny thing happened after that though. I was 17 when I enlisted and I turned 18 in November after I had been assigned to my ship. That following January, my ship deployed for Operation Desert Shield. After we left my mom got a phone call from the FBI informing her that I had neglected to register with Selective Service. She told them that we didn't know you still had to register if you had enlisted and already been sent off to war. The caller mumbled some apology and hung up.
Then after I got back from that deployment and was home on leave, a Marine recuiter called me. I asked him "Why should I be a Marine when I already have to give you guys rides everywhere?"
RacerX: The others are right, joining the marines to get chicks is an awful reason. Everyone knows that sailors get all the wimmins. The secret is to have 13 buttons on your pants.
Know why Marines always take their covers off when they go to the head? So they don't pee inside their hat.

This is a funny thing about the Marines. If you look for 8 seconds, you can find any number of retired dudes using their Marine status for glory in civilian life. In particular, thenoflamezone.net was rife with Marine insignia in .sigs and user profiles, and the civilian posters there would bend over backwards to say shit like "now, I have never fought for my country, like GunnyL has, so take my opinion with a grain of salt, but immigration..."

Civilians of course don't know this and imagine them shining ikons of virtue and nobility.

Hmmm marines.......hmmmmm.......oh right i think the cadence goes bullet sponge marine corps.....now dont get me wrong i do respect what the marines do for our armed forces, however some of the shit that that MC does boggles my mind......Example one: A buddy of mine NEVER, not one day in his life drove a car before he got sent to A school. He Drives humvees........when i told him i was concerned for him because of the roadside bombs, he responds "I'm not worried about the road sides, we are trained to detect and find those, its the driving part that I'm worried about because its still kinda new to me". Now as a normal human being that statement CONCERNS ME!!! I feel bad because he will be driving people around afghanistan and they will think he is drunk, however so will the insurgents so he im hoping they will figure he will kill himself and they can save the RPG. And i must argue that "priettiest" uniform for the marines, i think that the navy dinner dress is the best, either that or the cracker jacks are also incredibly sharp. And for some of us to be in the military, um they make you sign a favor basically stating you arent a faggot.
