here's a possibly dumb question for you texans. are the major highways really the only way out of houston? are there no back roads, or are they jammed too and the breathless news whores are only showing us the freeway jams (by jeff beck)? are texans just idiots?

Vlad: yes there are numerous back roads out of Houston. I suppose they are crowded too. My guess is that interstates attract evacuees like a hairy, crusty assholes attract fags.
Besides which, interstates or usually more direct than other roads.
Austin funny: When the 'cane was projected to fly over austin, people were in a panic buying up all the bottled water in town. There were even news reports of freaked out people fighting in the grocery aisles over water. Like they couldn't get all the WATER THEY COULD EVER WANT OUT OF THEIR KITCHEN TAPS FOR FUCKING FREE!!!!

Hurricane or not, I prefer back roads and there's some large-ish routes out of the city that look nice on the map.
I talked my girlfriend who lives in Houston through it on her cell phone. Cell phone + google map = evacuate successfully - glory and pain.
The fire and brimstone reactionaries have made for a surreal Austin Metroplex. Everyone is really flipping out. I'm not laughing because I'm not certain yet that it is an over reaction but I am puzzled. Logic seems to disagree with our environs being at the fingertips of devastation. We are 100+ miles inland. |

It's hard for northeasterners and other assorted city folk to imagine but in the west half of the country back roads and saecondary roads are mostly dirt and often barely passable.
Even in a lot of the larger cities like Phoenix and Amarillo and Las Vegas when you pass the city limits the pavement often stops right there.

YES! The Alamodome is going to become an NFL Mecca after the Houston Texans are forced to evacuate there. Then, soon after Miami (fuck their mothers) and Tampa get leveled by the next hurricane, San Antonio can finally have the four NFL Teams that they've been craving.
Oh, and as for the refugees... We can send them to Mexico with tents or something. |
