I'm looking for some really wild and awesome new music to listen to. If you know any bands that are a good time, I'd appreciate a recommendation.
some qualifications
1. Must be mainstream enough for me to download using bittorrent or dc++ or kazaa or something. I will not go hunting for vinyl.
2. I've already heard of and have a soft spot in my heart for Radiohead and Jimi Hendrix. Try to recommend music that is good and interesting but not super mainstream. That said, use common sense and refer to number one, if in doubt about how esoteric to get.
3. Don't make a list of all your favorite bands. One or two really good recommendations is pretty much all I'm looking for right now, so recommend one or two good bands and some songs I can check out.

The Tragically Hip - heard of, listened to
Silkworm - only one song found, "drunk", not incredible, but not bad either. This is pretty moot though, because I can't find anything else by silkworm
Zappa - heard of, listened to
Ministry - dled Every Day is Halloween. A little too techno-y for my tastes. I found more, so if they have better songs, let me know.
Chaka Kahn - too easy listenin'. I tend to like my music with a lot of rocking out

try out some recent flaming lips ("soft bulliten" or "yoshimi battles the pink robots")
if you can find it, try out laika (the uk band, not the surf band laika and the cosmonauts) and lali puna (making waves but i dunno if popular enough yet for kazaa, etc)
you can try hooverphonic for trip hop-ish stuff - each of their albums are very different though, so you may want to try a mix of songs. i recommend "a new stereophonic sound spectacular"
good electronic includes boards of canada, plaid, and amon tobin (no/sparse vocals)
also an enjoyable listen is air.
there's a denton, tx band called midlake that i saw open for do make say think. i thought they had a very radioheadish sound. not sure if you'll be able to find them either though.
i think i violated about every one of your rules, but, meh, it's the internets, whacha gonna do?
