There is a movement to outlaw religious ritual genital mutilation in the US.
You can see it here (warned).
Is it wrong to forbid something that is generations old in a culture?
Or is it fundamentally wrong and should be stopped?
Some argue that we circumcise boys, but this is hardly the same thing.
Opinions?

As always a very volitile subject, but before I can form an opinion, I need to know a few things.
1) You said that there is a growing movement to outlaw this in the US. IS this happening anywhere in North America? The link you provided displays images from Africa.
2) I know that there Americans that wish to ban practice from happening in Africa, so is your question really: "Is it fundamentally right for Americans to poke their noses into yet another cultural (albeit distasteful) rite practiced by generations of a people not ruled by US law?
If your answer to question 2 is yes (probably worded much more eliquently by yourself) then my answer to that would be: Certainly this practice of mutilation is quiet distateful, and proper hygenic education would definetly be benificial to these people. Steps beyond providing said education, I believe, would border on interference.
Hopefully, an educated people would be capable of making changes to their culture in a way that would still represent the age old meaning of the ritual, without the end result being the mutilation of a member of their tribe.
ie:"The Dance of the Mutilated Genitals" would be more acceptable (in my mind) than the actual deed.

It's fundamentally wrong.
The people it's done to are under intense pressure from their parents and don't have legal recourse. A woman who's had her clitoris removed has been denied sexual gratification, and the procedure is not reversable.
No one should ever be forced to have surgery of any kind unless it's for medical reasons.

What spurred me to start this forum was not so much that it isn't illegal, because it is, but a letter from Tolerance.org (the Eternal Fagbots of Compassion, and Yes, I Donated) about the increasing power of the Islamic Voice in the Religious Rights Venue. We can put a bag on our women's heads, we can beat or chickens, we can slaughter out goats in a Volvo, etc. The Courts are saying that its a Social Tradition, not a Religious Practice, therefore not protected by the Freedom of Religion Act and more than the poor Peyote Munchers. On the flip side, we mutilate thousands of males children every day with no protest at all. In fact, most people think its kind of weird to have a snorkel on your lizard (including me) but this article made me think.

There are three basic types of genital excision, although practices vary widely. In the first type, clitoridectomy, part or all of the clitoris is amputated, while in the second (often referred to as excision), both the clitoris and the labia minora are removed. Infibulation, the third type, is the most severe: After excision of the clitoris and the labia minora, the labia majora are cut or scraped away to create raw surfaces, which are held in contact until they heal, either by stitching the edges of the wound or by tying the legs together. As the wounds heal, scar tissue joins the labia and covers the urethra and most of the vaginal orifice, leaving an opening that may be as small as a matchstick for the passage of urine and menstrual blood. |

Regardless of the type these are brutal. The girls are usually between the ages of 6-12 years of age or younger and the procedures are done without anesthesia or sterile technique. The girls have no say in the matter and their mothers who have often had to undergo the procedures themselves are often helpless to intervene. This is something men have invented to keep women from having sex outside of marriage or before marriage. If the infections from the procedure are bad enough the girls are often left sterile... which of course is not discovered until much later... of course then she is not able to give her husband the much desired male heir... and she is then deemed useless.
At this time the countries in Africa are the number one places where female circumcisions are done routinely with the countries of the Middle East and Asia pulling up second and third. It is not necessarily something that is practiced in all Muslim cultures... only in certain areas and it is not written in the Koran that this is to be done.
Males circumcisions do not leave them sterile without the ability to enjoy sexual intercourse. While the names might be the same it is like comparing apples and spare ties.
