What do you guys think? These people have no homes, no jobs, they are basically fucked. Its not like they can just hop back into society next week and it will be next to impossible for the Gov to quickly get these people shelter and jobs, so they can start lfe again.
How about someone creating a website where people all over America willing can log on, post thier information and willingness to allow a certain amount of people to come and live with them. IE. Perhaps if they have an extra room they can give it. Or if they have a basement, perhaps a small family can move in.
We could get CNN to cover the Site and get some major media coverage. Then some of these people could have a chance to be reloacated to an already established home and try to get work in that area.
If they were able to spread out across the country it would be easier to get back to life then if they are all filed into Gov housing all setup for them...
Just a thought.... Who knows?

Good idea! Except how fast can houses for 50,000+ people be built? If people could take some of these folks in, at least they would have a nice place to stay for awhile. |

What about the govt paying the homeless, jobless people to build their own new houses? Teach them a skill while helping them out. While they're at it they can give geography lessons to them as part of their skill training so they know not to fucking build in flood zones.

the question was what can be done to really help. immediately, that means food, medical care and shelter. send money to the red cross for the first two. as for semi-permanent and permanent housing, the best i could think of was habitat for humanity. for obvious reasons, housing for these people can't immediately be built in new orleans, which should give you some comfort. what about putting them up in old military bases?

i just read that the red cross isn't even being allowed into new orleans, and neither are volunteer physicians. the rationale as i understand it is that if they get help, they'll expect it and they won't evacuate. this is apparently a fema/homeland security directive. i really hope this is false.

We could get the Minute Men to form an armed picket line at the edge of the disaster.
They would push these assholes back into the swamp to continue competing with the other dumbs that refused to evacuate like the sensible folks.
We could get the TV networks to helicopter in "frustration drops" like organic peanut butter (brown paste with peanut oil on top) with no bread--or cabbage patch kid in KFC cartons and sporks.
They could film the fun filled antics of the desperately stupid trying to make fire by hitting a melting jello-pop with a soggy hot-dog bun, or jars of mayonaise with whole wheat bread ("Mayonaise or no, you can't make me eat that fayg food Cletus!").
We could throw in the Governor of LA and the Mayor of NO labeled as "escape raft parts," then witness the hilarity of our contestants trying to figure out how these "parts" will turn a raft into a pimpin' Escalade.
The last one alive inside the picket line would be deemed "The Survivor" and would get $1 Million. The $1 million would come from the advertising revenues (at $5 million per 30 second spot) as would the funding for rebuilding NO and everything else--and not cost the "smarts", who sensibly stayed away from Katrina, a cent.
