I didn't see this before.
When I was in school, we had to paint on rag paper. Brushes, use horse hair, and nothing cheap, or you'll have individual hairs falling out and causing bubbles in your painting.

I was working on this one but I got bored with it and decided the effect I wanted would better be achieved through painting.
But I am suck at painting, as proved in my first attempt here.

My dad does watercolor. I asked him about your questions, and this is from him:
As far as watercolor paper and brushes goes, there's lots of stuff available, but I would use the best paper affordable....it does make a real difference. In general, I think even a rank beginner is better off with the best paper, rather than the "student grade". The best papers are 100% rag content with a neutral pH (i.e., non-acidic) you can buy paper as single sheets (22"x30" is standard size) or in "blocks", which are like pads and the blocks come in different dimensions.
Brushes: use artificial fibers.....watercolor brushes come in a variety; synthetic brushes are much cheaper than natural kolinsky sable brushes, and will work very well for any beginner....in fact, I often use them myself. I would suggest a #10, 6 and 2 round brush to start, plus a 1" flat and maybe a 1/2" flat too.
Paints: here again, I prefer professional grade, but student grades are usually pretty good too for beginners, and cost about half as much.
Materials can be bought by mail at the following:
Cheap Joe's
Daniel Smith
Dick Blick
or a local art supply store....retail, that is.
This is one of my favorites of his:

Go to an art store and buy the best you can afford, and ask the assitant to help you. The internet is good, but getting off your ass and finding out for yourself is better!
