Ok, swarmers, its time to weigh in on one of the age-old questions that has troubled mankind since that brief period when french stuff was cool. Beer vs. Wine.
Beer gets a rap as the common man's drink, a low-class beverage. Certainly some beers are particularly suited to rednecks, but there are premium beers out there as well.
Wine is rapidly gaining popularity and is often viewed as the classier way to drink.
Which do you prefer? Is wine really classier and more "cultured," or is it all just ghey hogwash bullshit? |

Coonawarra is a good cold-weather area, but the Barrossa and Clare Valley's produce some good wines as well.
My preferred winter tipple is a good liqueur port of the Tokay or Frontingnac style. Beer or a crisp, cold, white wine in summer.

Depends on the Meal, the time of day, the company and how deathly hot it is. I find I drink far less wine in these hot summer months, heck I even drink less permium beers opting for thier watered down domestic counterparts.
Wine usually falls in the Red Zone - Red Zin, Cabs etc
Beer - Miller lite for high noon refreshment or a Sammy Smith for the Evening or pre-concert treat
Mcgarpat: what type of wine is a Koonwarra?

Wine is classy and I enjoy it every now and then...
HOWEVER
Beer is mankind's age-old beverage. There are so many great wonderful beers out there that can fit any occasion. I vote beer.

Beer when you can't afford black label scotch. The only thing wine is good for is for giving as presents. Under my kitchen sink I have a collection that I give away every year, and people give me new and better wine to replace it.

Oh Qwerty you misguided fool, opt in for a bottle of good single malt someday. I have to be in the mood for wine, when I do it's always a red, never a merlot though. Beer wise I'm on a Sam adams Summer Ale/wheat beer kick lately with the good old standby of Stella Artois when I can find it. |

Beer is a staple of my diet.
But a glass of wine is also nice on occasion. I'm enjoying a nice 2002 Ravenswood Merlot at the moment and I'm perfectly content.
I only drink Italian or Californian wine. None of that French crap. I don't trust the frogs.

Koonwarra is an area of Australia. Nice Cabernets and Shiraz

I have had some nice wines from McLaren Vale as well.
The ozzies do a nice red. Lke Wotak, I don't do french, too many sulphites for my taste. I like a lot of the california reds, but they cost too much for their quality. Silver Oak is nice, but at 60 bucks a cork, a rare treat
I will cheat and have a Medac Rothschild, if it is old enough, that frenchie is worth the headache.

If you think Stella is good Belgian beer then you've probably drank too much of it. Try Duvel...
For all wine snobs look down on beer drinkers, I don't think any of them know the first thing about beers. At all. Duvel is a finely crafted Belgian Ale that has an amazing flavor to it -- its not even close to the crap lager that most winos associate with the word beer.
My whole point here is that beer seems to get no respect.
specialk: Ice wine, or cider, make my day complete. I'm particular to BlackThorn myself.
Cider wasn't really included in the mix here, but blackthorn is pretty good, although as far as I'm concerned its on-par with Strongbow. |

Every day, all day, Beer! (fruit ales, like Pete's Wicked Ale Strawberry Blond, Pyramid Apricot Ale "unfiltered", Buffallo Bill's or Blue Moon Pumpkin Ale, etc).
For good, tasty, red meat; good, tasty red wines! Wild Horse Cabernet, Silver Horse Melot, Castoro Zinfandel, Harmony Shiraz all compliment steaks, roasts, kabobs, chops, strips, and stews. But so do good stout porters and dark lagers.
For the appitizers (cheese tray, smoked fish, barbequed oysters, spinich dip, dried cranberries, even cheeze whiz in crackers), the white wines like reislings, gewurtztremeiners, chardonneys, white merlots, and sauvigion blancs all go wonderfully together.
I like what ever we have to go with what ever we're serving, but most of all, I like to share with our friends and each other. That's what its all about.

It is only that gins piss that you Americans call beer that gets no respect.
If you want a good ale, hunt around until you find Coopers Pale Ale. I know there is a bar in New York City that sells it, but I don't know about anywhere else. I don't know which bar, either, but it is run by an Aussie.

I agree, but go to a fancy restaurant in America (at least), they all have a pretty decent wine selection, but if you ask about beer, they'll sneer and offer Coors Light or Amstel. They don't really give you an option to order a nice cask ale, or something from belgium.

Connoisseur winos may find this interesting; leading scientists examine how the brain interprets wine odors and present their findings at a fancy wine-tasting party.
Personally, I shop for any dry white wine that is 14.5%. |

Frankly, the whole interpretation of the senses was very fascinating and made a lot of sense. With the number of wineries we have in this area we have been through a vast number of types and experiences. One of the more bizarre phenomenoa are the "phantom flavours" that appear and go away during the "layering" of the taste; as you swallow the sip, you will have a burst of cherry, followed by black pepper, then woody oak, then stnkey old panties, then beef jerky, finally grape jelly with burnt onion. (actual tasting experience at castoro cellers with 1987 zinfindel reserve). None of those things are in the wine, yet I tasted each one of them in the wine. How?
Read the article, Mex. or chug yer Ripple and puke. I don't care.
