I dabble with the Linux OS's on occasion just to keep up with how well they're coming along. My usual complaint is hardware recognition. It's pretty hit or miss especially for those of us who prefer to keep our hardware on the cutting edge.
I downloaded the latest stable Knoppix distro and threw it in my Inspiron 9200 expecting it to fail to load drivers for my IntelPro WiFi card just as every other distro has to date... and blammo! It finally worked. For the first time I'm able run my laptop with a fully functioning Linux distro AND stay wireless. Hell, I'm using it right now.
That means I'll have to do a bit of war driving while I'm off work to see how many open routers I can explore access the web through. Maybe do a bit of downloading...
If you haven't tried this latest Knoppix release, I suggest you give it a shot.
The only thing that isn't working on this system is the mouse touchpad doesn't recognize the tap/double tap = click/double click. Other than that it's perfect.
This is the best distro I can think of for Newbies. You don't have to install the OS and configure a dual boot, which can be tricky for a newb, you just run the OS from your CD rom and it runs out of ram and uncompresses what it needs on the fly. Of course, it's a bit slow. A gig of ram makes the experience tolerable though.
The best thing is; if you actually want to take the leap into Linux with both feet, you can install a full blown Debian OS on your box with just a few commands.
So, for all you linux newbs, Knoppix 3.8.1 is the place to start, IMHO.
Other live distros that rock ass are:
Dyne:bolic
Morphix
STD and
XMAME
If you want to go full blown harddrive installed Linux OS
I suggest Debian installed via a Knoppix distro or Suse 9.1 (or higher) installed via FTP. Google for tutorials on either of those. There's a shitload of info for newb installs on those two OS's.
If you don't like to search, research and read a lot, I don't suggest even fucking with Linux. It's an OS that demands you use your fucking brain for more than an alcohol and THC filter. Nobody is going to take your hand and spoon feed you information about how to use this OS. Trust me.
Anyway, I just thought this would be a cool topic for a serious thread.
Rock on Swarmers.

Ghost, it ain't for everybody. If Windows or MacOS works for you and makes you happy, roll with it. I usually do. WindowsXP does everything I need it to do.
I run a fileserver in my home that holds all my goodies for access on any PC in the house (we have 4 not counting my Studio gear), and I use Suse on that. It's solid as fuck. Linux makes a great server, but as a desktop, it's not always so cool. It depends on your hardware and how much time you want to spend customizing it to kick ass.
...but for hijacking internet WiFi spots, a live distro works like a charm.

definitely agreed.
it is time-consuming, but there's something satisfying about it.
then again, i'm a fucking geek.
