I have 1 friend in Iraq and the rest are home safe and somewhat sound. Aside from there nerves being shaky. I was in Desert Storm but I chose the Navy. To much of a pussy to man the front lines. Besides......... the boat had internet

My brother was in the first go around. I Joined after and have been luckily out since '97. I'll admit to crying on the team bus and losing a match because I was so worried about him. I'd go back for Korea, but otherwise fuck them. I tear up at every damn memorial service.memorial/ veterans gravesite I come across, and this one did the same, whatever gods they believe in over there, bless them all. |

I have some college friends there right now, fulfilling their ROTC obligations. One's missing a few perfectly good fingers, but, according to him, as long as the middle one's ok, he'll be alright.
I lost two very good friends in another place, also dusty and as foreign as Iraq. But that was in another life and another war, and the dry soil carried by the scorching winds has since covered the bodies, and after it rained grass grew all throughout, rejuvenating all but memories.

If i were cynical i would say:
"Well, if i dont like scorpions, and their stings, i dont go into the scorpionpit"
I had a friend who died in kosovo, but iam way to unpatriotic and/or smart to NOT understand why people go to war.
Get well soon...soldiers.

My recent Exgirlfriend's brother is over in Iraq with the Marines. He is evidentially in a unit suffering some of the worst casualties and fatalities. From my understanding his unit sweets the roads for mines, roadside Bombs and snipers. When his sister an I were dating I read a few e-mails from him describing how the Hummer in front of him was blown to bits by a bomb killing all the men inside as well as some accounts of some mortar attacks and so forth. It seems like a death sentence to me but she says there isn't a place in the world he would rather be. His father is a big time Hoo-HA GOD-Bless the USA Ultra republican Wal-Mart truck drivin' type of guy and his joining the forces is probably about the only thing he has ever approved of his Son doing.
Here is an example of the Hoo-Ha God Bless USA (note there are 9 flags as part of his display):

Last week when she called no doubt just to annoy me further; I felt compelled to answer the phone because I had heard a story on the radio about 21 men killed in the same Pennsylvania / Ohio battalion he went over there with and I feared her brother was one of them. I'm still baffled how some of these small towns (in his case rural western PA) can continue to be so supporting of this seemingly endless occupation when all their 18-25 year old sons have been scooped up out of their townships only to return via a Fed-Ex letter regretfully informing their folks that they had fallen for the cause of a greater good thousands of miles away.
Sorry this seemed to turn into such a ramble. To sum up: I do know a couple of guys over there. I fear greatly for their safety and hope they return home in one piece sooner than later. As for me, if it ain't on our shores I don't want any part of a military action, unless of course we change our policy and just absorb Iraq as a territory and rename it New East Jersy or something of the like.
By the way Iraq is currently exporting about 1.6 million Barrels of Oil per day. The Current Price of Crude is Upwards of $63 per barrel. That makes a hefty $100,800,000 per DAY. Shouldn't some of that be used to offset the monetary cost (somewhere over $5 bil per month) of the occupation and rebuilding efforts?
BeachGoat, I really always enjoy your posts…thanks
