BeachGoat: Harry Dean Stanton

That's an odd pick.

At first I thought you meant Dean Stockwell, to which I was prepared to give the same response.

This is a tough one. I'm a movie buff so I can see the validity in all the lists so far but iy's hard to choose just a few because they have all been in great movies and in totally shitty movies too.

Most of the lists are lacking in women. Why is that?

There are a few that every one missed that could be added.

Humphrey Bogart (African Queen, Treasure of Sierra Madre, To Have and Have Not, Maltese Falcon, Casablanca)

Mandy Patankin ( The Spaniard in Princess Bride, Sam Francisco in Alien Nation, he's in a lot of movies but you won't know it's him unless you read the credits)

Alan Arkin and Peter Falk ( both great actors individually and incredible when teamed up in the original "The In-laws")

Interesting that you should mention that. It's something that has been scratching away at my mind for some time.
Perhaps it has something to do with the longevity of male actors, as opposed to the abbreviated careers of their female counterparts.
I've been thinking that the Hollywood sex sells everything has something to do with it. The stereotypical May, November relationships that are driven down our throat, generally favour the old guys. (Clint, Sean...etc)

Also factor in the "take time off to raise my family" seems to be a female attribute, more so than male. Thus, the men make more movies, and therefore are more prone to be in the forefront of our thinking when compiling a list such as this.

Ladies: Please send your hatemail to anyone but me. I'm just thinking outloud.

Male:
1. Johnny Depp
2. Orlando Bloom (not just 'cause he's hawt)
3. Giovanni Ribisi
4. Ben Stiller
5. Leonardo Dicaprio

Female:
1. Kathy Bates
2. Dakota Fanning
3. Renee Zellweger
4, Nicole Kidman
5. Jessica Simpson (just kidding) Umm...I don't know. This list was hard 'cause most female actors do suck. They just get roles 'cause they look good and pretty much play the same twit they are in real life.
