I'm a huge fan of Chuck Palahniuk, the author who wrote "Fight Club" before it became a movie. I love his style and I don't think that movie does the book justice. I own all his books, except for Haunted, which came out the day before my last birthday and for some reason I have not gotten around to buying. Another one of his books, Choke, is currently being made into a movie as far as I know.
I think some of the quotes you will find among his books are on par with some of the "great" philosophers of our times.
"The difference between how you look and how you see yourself is enough to kill most people."
"I admire addicts. In a world where everybody is waiting for some bline, random disaster, or some sudden disease, the addict has the comfort of knowing what will most likely wait for him down the road. He's taken some control over his ultimate fate, and his addiction keeps the cause of death from being a total suprise."
"The only difference between suicide and martyrdom is press coverage"
"There’s always the chance you could die right in the middle of your life story"
There are many other quotes out there, check out ThinkExist or another quote site for more. Chuck's site is The Cult. If you'd like to read something by him, I suggest Invisible Monsters or Choke. Lullaby is a good one too if you want an easier to follow story.
You might not agree with me on how important his writing is, but I'm interested in what authors everyone else likes? Try to pick one favorite, maybe tell us why you chose them, share a favorite quote or passage and tell us what we should read if we deside to follow up on them.

I only read one of Palahniuk's books: Lullaby. I came to the conclusion that he has awesome ideas, but generally not as good of an execution.
Best book I have read in a long time is Lolita. If it's any indication of Nabokov's other books, he is definitely one of the better authors I could imagine.
Updike wrote some amazing short stories, but I can't stand his novels.
I'm developing into a literature fag, as you can see. |

Hi, my name is Stump and I'm an alcoholic......... What, wait sorry wrong meeting.
Richard Bach had some great influence on my life and happiness. inner-growth.info/main_bach.htm is a good site for quotes. I tend to forget the lessons he teaches and am actually in need of going back to read some of his works. |

Stump: Richard Bach had some great influence on my life and happiness.
I remember his Illusions being pretty cool. On the other hand, I was a ten-year-old shithead, too. :>
Me:
Clive Barker (lol fag)
David Foster Wallace (lol smartypants)
Heinlein (lol dead)
Those are the only ones I can think of now that I consistently enjoy. I'm probably forgetting three more I like even better.
I'll give a shoutout to JRRT not because his writing is the greatest but because niger was dedicated.
Also, fuk Vonnegut. And let me preemptively say fuk Hemingway, too. They were the JK Rowlings of their generations.

All time favorite - steinbeck, hands down for me. I could read the grapes of wrath a hundred times and not get tired of it.
current (fiction) favorite, Wilbur Smith. Makes for good vacation reading. he has two main theme/series. One is a family of mariners during the 1600's - 1700's. A couple books follow the varous generations. the other series is ancient egypt - same thing - follows generations of the same families.
most recent book read - Running the Amazon by Joe Kane. true story - in the 80's these dudes go to Peru to find the source of the amazon and kayak/raft from the beginning all the way to the end. If you liked Kon-Tiki, you'd like this.
