Hey all.

I am bored and messing around with a beta copy of the new MSN messenger 7.5. Just for shits and giggles. However the installer wont let me install it on my win 2k machine. I found an older version that was already uncompressed and in a rared folder for immediate use.

So, on to the question... I have the newest version but only as the installer. What i am wondering is how do i unpack/ decompile/ extract ,whatever the proper term is here, an MSI?

Anyone got any tip tricks links to software?

Cheers

Thats all well and good Vas.

But it appears from the reading i did that the msi editors allow for compiling and modifing existing msi's but not decompiling them. Perhaps im missing the point here.

I want to extract the files from within the msi and create a folder with the required files. The exe and dll's that would be in the program folder. i dont need the reg keys generated during install as i already have msn 7 reg keys on the system.

After rrading for a while within the results of the serch string Vas gave me i had an epiphany of how to word my search. Found

Windows has a utility called expand that pulls files out of compressed cabinet files. it runs under the command line. Tye expand /? to see how to use the syntax. I think this is what you are looking for

so, files run
command
expand /?

I could be wrong, cause I haven't done much work with .msis, but I don't think they're in MS' cabinet format. I think they might be in a proprietary format, and once you uncompress them -- assuming .msis don't have a built-in no-decompile option of some sort -- you're probably only going to have the files themselves, not the accompanying logic.

On the other hand, that seems to be what you want.

On the other other hand, why do you give a shit about MSN messenger? There are much better IM protocols, and freeware tools that let you connect to MSN without whatever crap MS has managed to infect their client with.

mostly it was, as i said, for shits and giggles. And secondly because accordign to M$ i'm not supposed to be able to run the beta on win 2k.

An experiment in doing what i'm not supposed to. I generally use mercury as an msn network client. especially on my mac. i dont do much with my PC apart from music production or the occasional stab at linux.

As a side note. i did manage to extract the msi and get the files i was after. And i do have the new beta of MSN runnin on a win 2k machine. I should buy myself a beer!
