But I can't show off the page to my friends. Is there a way where they type in my IP and go OMG I AM SO JELUS UV U/!!!1

I hope someone knows the answer, or I wasted all this time typing.

Yes. (open up the HTTP port on your comp/firewall/router/whateverthefuck) and assuming your ISP doesn't hate you, the world will be able to see your bullshit pussy.
EDIT: I think.

If you have port 80 open, which is the default http server, either your wan ip should work, or get something like http://www.no-ip.com/ . You register, you get your domain, set it up to your ip, and it should work. If you got an ip that changes, you can download their program to automatically update it.
Best of luck.

Also, if your isp hates you (Mine is verizon and they hate everyone.) they might block port 80, if that is the case you will need to open a different port and edit the httpd.conf file. It's just a text file. Change the line that says Listen 80 to Listen You'll then need to restart apache. When you give someone a link to your server it will then be http://: kay? |

GDR, can you view the page locally? If you were to type in http://127.0.0.1 in a browser on the box that has Apache, does it show you what you expect?

I'm a dumbass.
I used the angle brackets around the stuff for you to fill in when I posted. Here it is as should be.
Listen 80 to Listen (new port)
http://(your ip or domain) new port) |

So you're serving the pages up fine. Is the machine in question hooked directly to a cable/DSL modem, or to a router first?

It depends of your on a Mac. A mac has to be prefixed with your computer user name, then IP addy.

I worked with Apache in the olden days there were shit loads of config files, has it changed these days? Anyway GDR - do you know your IP address (dynamic or otherwise) assigned to you by your ISP [DOS box and type ipconfig[enter]] will tell you. Make sure your firewall has port 80 unblocked [as others have said] but DONT unblock everything. Yes your Port 80 rectum is open for abuse - oh well, the risk you'll have to take if you want to show the world your pages hosted on your own machine. Dont say on your pages what type of web server you are using and then hopefully an attacker will have to try harder to figure out what exploits to use, but if there good - it wont take long. Test on a LAN first?

As someone has already said your ISP proberly blocks your ports. This can mean:
1) No incomming whatsoever
2) Commonly used ports that can cause harm to your computer are blocked i.e. port 80 and port 139(i think that's the windows network port)
3) You are behind a transparent proxy (yes it is possible there are a few ISP's in Australia that do this), and it is possible to find your real IP.
4) Your ISP like mine gives you the option to enable the ports if you know what you're doing. Either send them an email or they might even have a automatic webscript that does it for you.
Maybe you could con Vas for some webspace ala who's-his face that got hosting at stile.

It's hooked up to the cable modem.
Is Apache up now? I've got your IP but can't access it on port 80. Are you doing this on Linux or Windows?
The overwhelming majority of the port-80 problems only apply to you if you're running IIS.
While I'm sure there are ISPs that do block port 80, I've never specifically heard of any. If yours does, you can always run Apache on port 81 or something.
Describe your setup. Just one PC, hitting the cable modem directly, or what?

are you running any firewall software, like zonealarm, or MS's firewall? either one may be blocking external connections.

Well, just run static pages, don't open any more ports then necessary, and run a firewall. Optionally, you could shut off the server when not using it. |
