vladtweano: Revealing article in Slate from another involved reporter (2-parter).

And a summary thereof if you're in a hurry and want your conclusions hashed out for you.

Cheney authorized Libby to leak classified information to journalists to defend the case for war. No direct mention of Plame. This is apparently part of Libby's defense, but I fail to see how this helps him since he's charged with lying to Fitzgerald.

same story on cnn (but not as good), btw.

...Libby also indicated what he will offer as a broad defense during his upcoming criminal trial: that Vice President Cheney and other senior Bush administration officials had earlier encouraged and authorized him to share classified information with journalists to build public support for going to war.

A federal grand jury indicted Libby on October 28, 2005, on five counts of making false statements, perjury, and obstruction of justice, alleging that he concealed his role in leaking information about Plame to the media.

i don't really understand the angle of this defense; it just doesn't connect. maybe this is so it doesn't turn into something worse? then again, isn't admitting that you were authorized to leak classified info opening yourself up for the penalties that entails?

A speculation I read somewhere (can't remember where) supposed that Libby's defense might amount to:

"Look, I was authorized to leak all this stuff to reporters. Everybody was talking about Plame, not just me. I'm very important and busy, my job is hard. I didn't intentionally lie to you, I was just confused and my memory is faulty. I worked long hours and my boss is a Dick. I can't remember everyone I talked to or what I said, or about whom. No, really, serious."

If this is the best defense that an expensive legal team can muster, hoyl carp.

Reuters: Cheney's name has surfaced in other court documents as well. According to an appeals-court decision made public last Friday, "the vice-president informed Libby 'in an off sort of curiosity sort of fashion'" that Wilson's wife worked at the CIA one month before her identity was made public.

Sing, you bastard! Sing like a canary!

Here's a unique look into the mind of Patrick Fitzgerald:

Patrick Fitzgerald's Blog

Think Globally Prosecute Locally - I grew up in Flatbush, kept my nose clean, went to law school. Now that I am in D.C. I am finding that this town is a travesty. It's a travesty of a mockery of a sham of a mockery of a travesty of two mockeries of a sham.

EDIT: Check out his music fav's:
Jimi Hendrix, Bruce Springsteen, Doors, Frank Zappa, Led Zeppelin, Ramones, Grateful Dead, Nile Rodgers and CHIC, and Clay Aiken.

Woodward's Plame Leak Deep Throat

Says Patrick Fitzgerald:
The whole truth will be coming out soon enough - dying to tell you now, but it would not be prudent. Nope not gonna do it.

Great Big Libby Case Update, Part I
I’ve been insanely busy the last few weeks, and Fitz and company haven’t exactly been standing still either. So I thought I would do a huge update on all those Libby things I’ve been trying to get to, but haven’t been able to hit because of pressing news issues or live-blogging needs or life in general. So for all the Traitorgate aficionados, this is your lucky day.

New Libby Filing — A Bit of Analysis
There was a VERY interesting bit on p. 20:

…contemporaneous documents reflect the points that Mr. Libby was to make to reporters, and these documents do not include any information about Wilson’s wife. (emphasis by Team Libby — no doubt a Babs Comstock addition as a Cliff’s Notes to the press corps)

This suggests to me that Libby had written talking points about what to say to Judy Miller and other reporters. Well, isn’t that interesting? Who drew these up? Cheney? Rove? The members of the WHIG? Libby himself? Who gave them to Libby? So many intriguing questions spring to mind on that single little new tidbit, don’t they?

Grand Jury Hears Evidence Against Rove
"Fitzgerald is said to have introduced more evidence Wednesday alleging Rove lied to FBI investigators and the grand jury when he was questioned about how he found out that Valerie Plame Wilson worked for the CIA and whether he shared that information with the media, attorneys close to the case said.

Fitzgerald told the grand jury that Rove lied to investigators and the prosecutor eight out of the nine times he was questioned about the leak and also tried to cover-up his role in disseminating Plame Wilson's CIA status to at least two reporters."

Two Trials and a Treasonous Trio

Think of it this way: if Scooter is convicted, even as key fabrications of Iraq war propaganda come apart at the seams, then the War Party will be discredited – and we might even recover our senses long enough to get the heck out of Iraq. Then legions of antiwar leftists and conservative realists, who want to sell out human civilization to the Islamo-fascists and are secretly in league with America's enemies, would overrun Washington, until this point secured by the War Party – and then what? From the neocon point of view, "outing" Plame was a patriotic act, indeed, the only course that could have possibly served the public interest. The CIA, in their view, wasn't just against the war and the methods employed by the administration to justify it, they were on the other side. Therefore, it was Scooter's patriotic duty to expose Plame. Case closed.

Now confirmed: Valerie Plame was assigned to work on Iran regarding Nuclear Proliferation before her cover was blown.
Reports Shuster in this rush transcript: "INTELLIGENCE SOURCES SAY VALERIE WILSON WAS PART OF AN OPERATION THREE YEARS AGO TRACKING THE PROLIFERATION OF NUCLEAR WEAPONS MATERIAL INTO IRAN. AND THE SOURCES ALLEGE THAT WHEN MRS. WILSON'S COVER WAS BLOWN, THE ADMINISTRATION'S ABILITY TO TRACK IRAN'S NUCLEAR AMBITIONS WAS DAMAGED AS WELL."

Good timing on the admin's part, eh?

No announcement of Rove's indictment yet? And it'll be next year before Libby's trial...

Can't we just have a public hanging and be done with it?

EDIT: rumor has it there will be a press announcement tomorrow (Friday 5-19) about Rove's indictment. Expect Tony Snow in full damage-control. I can just hear him now, "...but some people would rather play politics with our national security."

Another rumor (from the same source) says:
The special prosecutor, who has prosecuted one defense attorney in the Hollinger case, is reportedly investigating whether Luskin, as an officer of the court, may have violated laws on obstruction of justice.

Wayne Madsen Report
WMR stands by its report that there was a meeting between Fitzgerald and Rove and his attorneys at Patton Boggs LLC in Washington on Friday, May 12. The meeting was to inform Rove that he would be indicted. The Attorney General had been informed in person by the Grand Jury that they had indicted Rove -- the same courtesy afforded him last October in the Libby case.

Libby's testimony on Cheney, etc
Q. And during that time did the Vice-President indicate that he was upset that this article was out there which falsely in his view attacked his own credibility?
A. Yes Sir.
Q. And do you recall what it is that the Vice-President said?
A. I recall that he was very keen to get the truth out. He wanted to get all the facts out about what he had or hadn't done, what the facts were or were not. He was very keen on that and said it repeatedly. Let's get everything out. He wanted to get it all that. That's what I recall.

Cheney's handwritten notes on the Wilson op-ed
