Hopefully some of you more hardwarey dudes can help me out on this.
For the first time in two months, I rebooted my Gentoo box to get into XP. As soon as I got to my desktop, I got a boot error about the ATI control panel (for my Radeon 9800 pro) not starting because "no ATI driver is installed."
I figured that was wierd, since I haven't been mucking with it, so I reinstalled the driver and rebooted.
Came up without error message, launched Counter Strike. You know how it resets the monitor to whatever resolution your game profile indicates? As soon as it did that, the entire PC shut right the fuk off.
It won't start again.
I don't smell any particular ozoney or burnt-electricals smell, but the power supply is hot as a motherfuker.
Think my power supply is shot, or what? And, just so I can get my rage properly scheduled, what are the chances it took out one or more of my other lovely components with it?

This may help
It's strange that your PSU is hot and if it has blown then I guess it could have spiked the power thru the rest of your computer much like a lightning bolt hitting a house and frying all eletrical shit.

It's a 50/50 shot Vas. Sometimes the ps just dies and other times it takes something with it. It put's out different voltages for the different componants. 1 rule of thumb is when it comes to ps get more than what you need. The last ps that died on me took the DVD drive and mother board.

Vas, whether your mobo is dead or not depends on both the PSU and the motherboard. If either one is worth their salt you should be fine. Lots of Intel mobos are not very trusting
when it comes to PSUs and feature power management circuitry which cuts off current flukes from the rest of the board.

It really is a myth that PSUs with a better wattage rating are *generally better*. In reality, even the very muscular computers with high-end components rarely consume more than 300W at peak usage (we're talking single-core CPU here).
Instead, what you need to be looking at is the build of the PSU and the amount of juice it supplies to its rails. I recommend PSUs by Sparkle/Fortron Source (FSP group), the wattage really does not matter as long as individual rails get a lot of amps and they are clean.
If money is an issue (an it always is), I would say go for an EPS12V power supply (aimed at 24/7 servers, much stricter power specs), and use a converter to use it in your ATX12V desktop. An AMS Mercury, while lacking PFC, is a rock-solid supply that includes a desktop conversion kit. Here's one link to a 460W version:

Actually, I suspect that your video card is caput, not the PSU. It may also be shorting the PSU or the AGP bus, preventing the whole thing from turning on.
Try a different vid card first. |

That would be:
PSU hot. [not ded, but possibly damaged]
Vidcard flakey. Could be because it's a power hungry mofo--or ded.
AGP slot fried?! dunno. maybe or not.
Mr. lackingcracka is on the trail, I would run a multimeter on the powersupply to check that it does what it is supposed to do [each rail is what it's rated to be].
Unhooks everything that you want to keep--maybe the PSU overloaded from another component--you can never tell.
Try a different video card.
If this was me, I would just ditch the whole thing, take out the drives and build me a new system [great excuse btw].

If ps is warm, its working. I agree wit crackheadlicken, id bet on a vid card. Buy a cheap extension cord...plug all components into it then plug that shit in. Sparks=good. Nothing=good. mmmk?
Oh yeah, my PS has a surge protector and an actual battery. It will run anything plugged into it for an hour or so. When my power goes out...i lose intraweb but can save or delete anything i need and shut it down on my own. And trust me, that thing is HOT as FUCK when it runs.

I finally dug up a spare, modern PSU and plugged it in and yes, the CPU fan kicked on, so I went out to CompUSA and paid $97 for an Antec Truepower 430. Shit is loud on startup -- but at least there is a startup.
Counter-strike works, too, so if there's anything wrong with the video card, it's intermittent.
Thanks d00ds.
Cracka: what the fuk is a rail, anyway? Fancy term for a power line? |

if you got others in the house, check the 120 / 240 switch on the supply. mine git hit by accident and did something similar, drove me fing nuts trying to figure it out
Aso, start pulling your cards one by one and see if the system wakes up, may have a shorted card loading down the supply
last resort, a supply is 20 bucks at a show.
If you have a newer motherboard, the motherboard controls the supply. Sometimes clearing the non volitile memory will unlatch the circuit that controls the supply- check the book that came with the motherboard for instructions, usually a jumper you put on for 20 seconds or so with the power OFF.

Vas, you paid too fuking much for an over-hyped PSU, at CrapUSA no less. Seriously dude, at the $100 price point you can get an incredible powerhouse with internal redundancy/failover; silent, too. Here's the one for you:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817151023
Of course, I seriously doubt you need anything more than 350-400 Watts, and a good PS for that would be in the $60-70 range with shipping. PM me if you still have the receipt and need a pointer.

I know. I don't buy shit at CompUSA and its ugly brethren unless it's an emergency or for some stupid reason I just can't wait.
I couldn't wait, cause this is my main box and I have no modern PSUs powerful enough that I can spare, so I plan to return this one within the 21 days.
I don't need redundancy and failover and shit. Show me something cheaper and decent.
Powered components:
Radeon 9800 Pro
3 7200RPM IDE disks
CDROM
Floppy

Good choice by IMBOLC*, but in reality I think you only really need its younger brother, here for $55
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817104936
or the SeaSonic here for $61 (considerably quieter)
