Good computer. You'll find that CORSAIR also makes an awesome cool water cooling package that you can buy for $220AUS. As for the case Lian Li make great cases but you would be better off buying a cheap case as you'll find that when you upgrade the mobo the new one won't fit in it(the past few times I've done upgrades I had to buy new cases now I build my own).
You could proberly save $200 on the 64bit proccessor and spend it on a water cooling kit then use coolant and a beer (small six tinny holder) fridge to freeze the computer and do a major overclock on a 3000+ 64bit proccessor.

Man, that's an obscene amount of money to pay for a case; it's not even that great. Instead, I would suggest Thermaltake Armor for about $100 less.
I have seen studies that show that the difference in the performance of CL2 RAM and inexpensive CL3 RAM is negligible (<10%). I would suggest buying cheaper RAM, unless you plan to overclock (and even then).
Hard drives will make a whole lot of difference, even with 2GBs of RAM. Get a 74 gig Raptor, you won't be sorry. Not sure if RAID0 is the way to go -- you reduce your effective MTBF by a factor of 2, and performance benefits in single-user mode are debatable.
The graphics card is a good buy, but if you wait a month its price might go down another $50 as the R520 is released.
For the CPU, why not go for dual-core? The Register says that AMD will be lowering the bulk prices within a few weeks.
And as a final note, I understand it's great having all this money to blow. It's just that I built a computer for $350 that looks just as good and is within 20% of the performance of the one you are going to build (sans the graphics card, I am waiting for the price cuts/sales). Why are you willing to spend this much money on something that will cost half of its value in six months?

Sorry, outta practice. They've got great prices and packages. Go to the custom configurator for upgrades to systems that include Half-life, card-readers and 3 years free support.

Please to share how you did this, MagicCrackLantern. I've been seriously considering building my own here and thought I'd have to spend between 1,000-1,400 to get anything halfway decent.

Meh. I've cooled off on the idea of building my own, at least for now. I just don't have the time/know-how right now. I definitely want to try it in the future, though.
Those cyberpower ones look pretty good, especially this one.
I'm wondering if it'd be worth it to go with a different CPU and/or motherboard than the ones they've got as defaults on it though. I'm willing to spend between 800-900 on it.

I like that cyberpower site. Next time I buy a desktop I may go with them instead of building my own. Decent prices along with the ability to not have Windows preinstalled.
i made the following customized desktop which came to $1527 (with 3 year onsite warranty):

CPU : (939-pin) AMD ATHLON64 3000+ CPU w/ HyperTransport Technology
MOTHERBOARD : (Sckt939)ASUS A8N-SLI nForce4 SLI Chipset SATA RAID Dual PCIE MB w/Gb-LAN,USB2.0,IEEE-1394,&7.1Audio
MEMORY : 2048 MB (512MBx4) PC3200 400MHz Dual Channel DDR MEMORY (Corsair Value RAM)
HARD DRIVE : MAXTOR 250GB 7200 RPM Serial ATA 150 8MB CACHE HARD DRIVE
Hard Drive 2 : MAXTOR 250GB 7200 RPM Serial ATA 150 8MB CACHE HARD DRIVE
VIDEO CARD : NVIDIA Geforce 6600 256MB 16X PCI EXPRESS VIDEO CARD
VIDEO CARD 2 : NVIDIA Geforce 6600 256MB 16X PCI EXPRESS VIDEO CARD

k, question: Should I go with two 80 GB HDs in RAID 0, or just stick with the 160 they've got? I'm messing around with every configuration I can think of sub-$900 with this, and I think I can jew it out. All I want to use this for is moderate gaming and schoolwork, but if I can get this option, is it worth it, performance-wise?

According to this overview, any performance gains will be basically unnoticable. I would suggest getting the single drive (leaving you space to later add another one). |

chex: unless you're definitely going to SLI two nvidia cards, you can probably get the non-SLI motherboard cheaper.
sexninja: i really don't think RAID 0 is worth it. you do gain some performance, but i'd think it's only necessary for real-time audio/video capture. also, your chance of drive failure using two drives doubles.
