I was offered a job a few days ago. I would be the boss, 10K-15K more a year than I'm making now to start and they would match my current benefits. The draw back is that I would absolutely hate what I'm doing. After a few sleepless nights I have decided to turn it down. I love what I'm doing now and enjoy going to work.

What's more important to you, money or happiness?

I've had jobs where I've been profoundly unhappy, and the paycheck just was NOT worth it. I'd go for happiness.

Money can always buy happiness. I hear it goes for about $150 an hour nad you have your choice of what she looks like.

You did the right thing. I once worked for a person who was a real billionaire. In the two years I was with him, not once did I ever see him smile or be happy in any way. All that money and things and not happy. You will never really know how smart a decision you made, but you can imagine. Which is a lot like saying: "You may never quite know what a bad decision it would be to cut off your balls and feed them to the dog, but you can be pretty sure only the dog would be happy.

government_death_robot: I am making minimum wage and I despise my job.
Tell them I am interested in the position.

I also work crappy hourly jobs but I won't even consider any that pay anything close to minimum. Is there really nothing else you can find that might pay at least a few dollars more an hour? I honestly didn't think that truly minimum wage jobs existed for anyone beyond 14-16 year olds (the only time I worked such a job).

Minimum wage jobs stretch as far as 17, apparently.
The only thing I could do in this town that didn't pay minimum wage would be to whore myself, and there's already someone on the main corner in town. So I can't do that.

That's shitty man. Granted one of my jobs is 7+tips / hour and the other is ~9 / hour which isn't magnificent but I'm sorry for ya man, I can't imagine being forced to think that my time was worth 5.whatever / hour.

I don't care too much for money, money can't buy me love, or happiness.
Consider all the unfulfilled rich people you've met or heard about.
Miserable, stressed, self-destructive and suicidal, money can bring some pleasure but happiness comes from within.
For me I'd take a genuine contentment and acceptance of life as it is and an appreciation,
gratitude if you will ,for what I have over all the money I could imagine to throw at my problems.
Seems money causes more troubles than it fixes.
Happiness is an attitude, a state of mind, a choice, have at it.

This is bullshit, poor fuks have exactly the same problems. Wealthy people that I know personally are happy (I bet they never have to scrape change to buy smokes, or juggle phone/gas/mortgage/rent).

Money does buy happiness, prove me wrong.

I'm a carpenter at a university. I've been there for 15 years so I'm well paid already. I was offered a property management position at a private school.

Exactly. I'd have taken that money along with the job that I hate. You'll regret this, MaM.

Regret it 'till the end of time.

Money buys you the ability to get the nagging little things out of the way, so you can deal with the shit that matters.

I think the issue here is more or less how each of us defines "rich". I think it's a relative term. Compared to some of you, I am "rich". Compared to others, I'm poor.

I've often said that it isn't terribly difficult to make A LOT of money, as long as all you want to do is make A LOT of money.

I believe that there are a great many things that are far more important to me than money. I make a comfortable living and don't really stress over getting bills paid each month or spend sleepless nights worrying where my next meal might come from. On the other hand, there are "things" that I'd like to have but cannot afford to buy.

I think you absolutely made the right decision. Sure this other possition might have paid more but, it surely doesn't pay the most. So, what happens next time a higher paying job comes along? you blow this one off to get paid even more?

Kahuna and Vasudeva summed it up best in my opinion. I am happier when I am not broke. Happy at work and happy in the rest of your life are two different things. Be a miserable sob at work and morph into the cheery sob that has 15K more a year to enjoy/share/spend on the way home.

A few years ago, I was making 10$ an hour right out of school.
When I landed the 50K a year job, complety changed my life. Made me happier, job was way harder with way more responsibilities. Completley worth it IMHO

i definitely agree with barch here (OMIGOD!).

eventually you reach a point of diminishing returns. if you can pay your bills and have a little to play with, do you really need more money at the cost of your happiness?

my answer is no, but then again i'm not doing so bad. would i take a raise if it meant being on-call? hell no. if i made less, though, it might be worth it.

Seriously though. I will never be happy in any job. One place everyday. Too stagnant. I'll be happy when I retire which should hopefully be soon once I win the lottery. Come on lucky number 21.

I've done the same sort of thing, changed to a job that paid more, was more difficult and carried more responsibilities and more stress - but I LIKED the job. So I had money AND happiness.

But if I hadn't liked the job itself, if I'd had money but misery along with it? I'd've been outta there sooo fast.

Barch says it well.
