So a friend of mine @ work got a Treo Palm 600 PDA/Cellphone and I have started to think about replacing my current cell phone. Does anyone on L/S use a PDA/phone or have any advice? I would like having the 'qwerty' keyboard and would like to have a camera although it seems like the one on his treo 600 pretty much sucks.

I may be bias as I get mine for free and Research In Motion pays my mortgage, but I love my BlackBerry. Ask LK, he's addicted now. |

I've been using the Treo600 since it came out November 2003. I've replaced it 3 times (Thanks Best Buy) but other than that it's worked out sweet. I've got email, IM, SSH, IRC... pretty much everything I could every want out of a internet enabled PDA on it.
I have been known to make phone calls on it too from time to time.
If I could actually get a decent price for my 600 I wouldnt mind upgrading to the 650. Bluetooth plus high-def display would be very nice.

It only cost $1.50.
It's pretty good.

I vote Treo 650, and plan to jew my company into giving me one -- especially if this on-call shit I'm hearing hints of from the big boss ever happens.
Played with a Blackberry, found it too wide. It was like holding on to a pingpong paddle.
EDIT: The camera on a Treo 650 is way better than the camera on my Motorola v550.

Actually, you have a Motorola v551, phonebuddy
Also, peep the newer, smaller, blackberry generation:

The thing about the Blackberry is... I don't seem to like it.
There's something kind of odd about it. It's like they managed to cram some high-tech guts into a 1978 scientific calculator case or something. This may not be true on the latest model, though.
I'm pretty sure I hate the scroll wheel, too.
Does it have a touchscreen?

I've got co-workers pimpin' both the Treo and the BlackBerry. I am much more impressed by the BlackBerry - It was created with the intention of being a phone FIRST, unlike the Treo.
Plus? all the rappers are using them.

Better screen, SD card, apps. Pretty much cinches it for me -- though perhaps the Blackberry wins out on the Thinkpad-like durable casing.

I need to play with the Blackberry some more before passin on it but I tend to agree that it is a funky size and I would really like to have a semi-quality camera too. I think the $400 price tag is the only thing slowing me down on the treo 650. When the price is getting close to that of picking up a bargain laptop or a new transmission for my Mirage I start to hesitate.

The 7100 Series does rawk out Even since I got to demo one I have been looking to get it as my production device. The screen is new and crystal clear! The sure type takes some getting used to but I actually prefer it now over the bulkier 7280 which I have now.
Vas - No touch screen sorry. But the 7100 Series has an awesome speakerphone! |

Is SureType like t9w on phones?
And aren't you limited by phone carries? I can't get a blackberry cause Sprint won't carry them. |

Sure type is pretty sweet. Basically its still a qwerty keyboard like a normal BlackBerry handheld but with two letters per key. As you type it guesses what you are typing. It works pretty well except for slang and swear words, but if you type FUCK 4 times in a row, its programmed into the phone and you are good to go.
Also Sprint does carry the BlackBerry. Most major carriers worldwide are hoping on board if they already haven't

Tech quibble: if Suretype is any better than T9, it's probably only because T9 systems (as I've seen them) assign 3 or 4 letters to a key, whereas the 7100g assigns only two. So same exact tech, I'll bet -- you just get your match 1/3 quicker because there are fewer options to tax the CPU.
I could be talking out my entire ass, of course, and RIM invented some neato new predictive text method: I'm just not counting on it.
EDIT: TYPO FIXED THAT IS ALL FOR NOW!

I'm currently haggling with sprint for a Treo 650. If they don't give it to me I saw some offers for $180 with new service at cingular. Only downside is cingular rapes you on bandwidth charges (unlimited is like $40+ a month) whereas sprint has a decent rate (10 or 15 a month depending on if you get the discounted vision offered to you).

I use a Nokia 7610: it's a top-notch phone, got a great calendar, and a very nice megapixel camera. However, its biggest selling point AFAIK is the programmability. I can even hack Python on the little sucker. Not to mention full J2ME support with all the JSRs and the (fucked-up) Series 60 C++. |

One more reason to go BlackBerry!
How the Blackberry became Sacred
Friday, July 8, 2005 Updated at 10:05 AM EDT
Globe and Mail Update
The following letter is in response to Jack Kapica's story Why the calls didn't go through (July 8):
"You might be interested to learn that we heard from our brother-in-law Paul in London within minutes of him receiving our e-mail. We simply e-mailed him on my husband's Blackberry and got Paul's answer ("I'm fine, just missed the explosions by a half hour") from his Blackberry right away.
Paul has a strange tendency to be in disaster zones at weird times. He was in Thailand during the tsunami, and he and his family were safe only because they decided to eat breakfast late and not be on the beach at the exact wrong time. Once again the only thing that worked was his Blackberry. We found out he was fine right away because his e-mail worked, even when there was no more phone, water, electricity and he was looking down at hundreds of dead bodies on the beach.
Same thing happened a few years ago when he was in the Mexican jungle, and we needed to reach him regarding a family emergency in Canada. (No I'm not making this up.) Cellphones didn't work, but his Blackberry did, and we found him.
Advertisements
In our family, the Blackberry is a sacred thing, because no matter how many disasters we face around the globe we always know immediately that everyone is safe, and no amount of money can buy that kind of peace.
The guys at RIM are my heroes."

I didn't realize that cingular was charging so much for the online access either. I went down to the store last week ready to get the treo but the service fee really took the wind out of my sails. I have too many rollover minutes and have added several family members to my plan to leave cingular, I just hope they get their act together and offer some competative rates so I can finally be one of the cool kids with a PDA/Phone.

Ok Time to dig up this thread again. Its been a while and the technology has improved or at least moved on a bit. In an obsessive toy buying fit I just bought a gps device & software for racing (http://maxqdata.com/MQGPS.htm) that requires a bluetooth connection to stream data, with a Windows Mobile 5 (non smartphone edition) device recommended. Of course once I dropped $300 on the overpriced GPS unit & software pkg I just HAD to skip over all the cheap used PDAs and Last Years Pocket PC/Phones for the newest most expensive piece of crap Cingular would sell me the Cingular 8525 made by HTC Hermes with the 'broadband' speed 3g internet.
So, does anyone have any personal experience with this device or windows mobile in general? Any tips & tricks or Any software that I should play with? Also how about some of the best Mobile content sites?
