ghostrideryyz: stock splitting is gud biznazz, but not fer the shareholders.
How is it not good for the shareholders? It makes it easier to sell your investment -- its much easier to cash out of two $50 shares than one $100. Also, usually the split share prices go up further. So, instead of having one $100 share, you now have two $60 shares (or something), a gain of $20.
Tell me why I am wrong please? |

For sure. Just like the Dow hitting 10K, there's a perception of momentum and value, and peoples' perceptions are massively important.
UNH stock being worth $110 seems high to some, but if it splits at $100, turns to $50 a share, then those shares climb back to $100, I've just made $50 a share without people screaming on the message boards that "this ones gunna tank, take my word 4 it!!!!!" |

god knows that i'm no economic genius, but i have always been under the impression that a stock split is a devil's deal to artificially inflate the value of stock.

Well, that's what Warren Buffett would have you believe, but he's an idiot. He really should have followed his cousin Jimmy's lead, all the way to Margaritaville. |

vasudeva: so I'm listening like you was EF Hutton and whatnot.
My Dad worked for EF Hutton (the company) back in the day. They were involved with the mafia (they delivered laundered money in Pizza boxes). Also, they ripped off smaller banks through check-kiting schemes and did all kinds of other illegal stuff.
They no longer exist.

It's been down a good bit ever since the whole options backdating scandal. In response, they've fired McGuire, the CEO who presided over the incredible cash-dollaz natal boom of the company.
A lot of people seem to think it's still a really good company -- people who don't have much investment in it already are just being hesitant. It'll get back up there. It hasn't been that solid a choice for that long for no reason.
Kind of odd to think that when I got into the employee stock ownership thing, they gave me that backdating option as well. It was a routine (but totally sweet) part of an entity selling you its assets, giving you a discount for being an employee. A lot of people felt a billionaire CEO shouldn't take advantage of it, I guess, and it's that perception that has made the stockprice kind of tread water lately.

Stock splitting is actually a clever ploy to allow more people to buy stock. Generally you have to buy in minimum lumps of 10.
Well if a stock never split, some folks would have a hard time buying at $300 a share

That's why I am pro-split. I want to invest too, but without splits, only tiny companies would be affordable investments for the average man. This way, everyone can invest -- does it really inflate the price? Possibly. However, almost every company trades at a premium to their earnings -- thats what you need to look at -- in most cases that premium is pretty reasonable. Warren Buffett is an elitist prick (moreso than me). |
