Greetings!
I would really appreciate some help here. I need a program to
run on my COMPAC laptop. I don't care if I have to write it or
download it.

Incidentally, I wrote one for my Commodore 128 to do this very
thing, and it was fairly sophisticated for a basic program, yet was
an easy write (I used Peek and Poke and paired the square numbers
with the contents by having them in adjacent locations). However,
I'm sure that Basic on the C-128 and the laptop are two very
different animals. Here's what the program needs to do. It is a sort
of "game master" program.

No visuals other than prompts and words are needed.

The concept is that there are 227 "Squares" or locations. At
start, each player punches in a value, which is specific to a
particular square/location. For example, there would be 3 in 122, 4
in 185, 1 in 98, and 1 in 85. Each location being a "Square," and
each value being the number of items occupying that square.

A player cannot see the data put in by another player. Each
player may have his own group of squares, so a single "board" is not
required.

After the players have punched in their locations, the computer
retains those locations. The next step is that the players "Search."
They look in a particular square. If there is something of the other
player's in that square, it is revealed.

For example, the opposing player looks in squares 125, 124, 123,
and 122. 125-123 reveal "Nothing." But 122 reveals "3"

Sounds a little like battleship doesn't it? The concept is
basically the same. You check the square, and if there's a value in
it, it reveals the value.

After a round, the players can restart the program, punch in new
values, and search each other's "Sheets." But unless a square is
searched, it will not reveal its values to the searching player.

A function that allows the display of information to be turned
on and off might help so the inputting player can check his work
before turning it over to the searching player.

Is that explanation clear enough? I don't think we're talking
real complexity here.

Thanks

Mogadeet

PS: I don't know squat about computers. And I graduated from
college before the PC was invented.

I think this is more of an "ask slashdot" sort of thing though.

I don't know anything beyond QBasic and the html needed to make clicky-links.

And I usually screw up both of them.

Who doesn't love being kicked in the groin?

Anyways, have you tried contacting ask.engadget.com?

They have good hacks on there sometimes. I hacked my iPod with them, yes I know iPod is a bit tired, but I got it for free from that pyramid scheme freeipods.com and it works so I won't through it away. So there. : P

Yes, that is definitely the ticket. I will try those places. Slashdot is a pay site, and I am loathe to put money over the web, but I suspect that what I am asking is not difficult to the right person (He-Who-Knoweth-Programming).

Thanks bunches.

Indeed you shall, my friend, indeed you shall...

No it isn't. Now you can sleep safely.

but I suspect that what I am asking is not difficult to the right person (He-Who-Knoweth-Programming).

Ah, yes, you mean Fortranicus, the God of programming. You better start preparing for the ritual sacrifice he demands for payment. A really sweet app. will cost you a baby or two.

You mean I won't have to sacrifice a small furry animal in a cornfield under a full moon in the dead of night? Fantastic! Now I won't miss those X-Files reruns.

Slashdot would not let me post without an account, and it would not let me establish an account or register or do anything with giving money to pay-pal. I tried and was totally unsuccessful.

Well, I haven't ever heard of that happening, but I've had my Slashdot account for like 7 years or something now. They'll never make me pay them a cent, thats for damn sure.

Also, Heather rocks.
