It just came out, so you may not have yet seen the trailer for "Reign of Fire" http://www.apple.com/trailers/touchstone/reign_of_fire.html (you need Quicktime, and if you don't have it. you can get it for free at www.apple.com).
Set in the year 2084, a dragon who has been laying dormant for thousands of years is awakened and wreaks bloody havoc on the Euros. Peeps are forced to hide out in ruins of castles, seeing as them shits are all that can withstand the flaming breath of the beast. Stars Christian Bale and Matthew McConaughey (yeah, he's a tool, but in this movie he looks like the prisoner "whoever has the gold makes the rules" version of Jafar from 'Aladdin', so it's ok. ) The reason I note this particular movie (other than the fact that it looks pretty badass) is this: I was on the movie set in Ireland last summer (actually they had finished shooting months before and were striking the set) and as of recently I was starting to wonder why I had not heard of its release yet. Then I saw the trailer yesterday and realized: Oh. All that digitalization. I'm surprised it's out so soon! So here's the evidence:
Exhibit A: Rocks: real. Beautiful grassy mountain: real. Castle: Styrofoam and aluminum.
Exhibit B: MOMAD on the movie set in western Ireland holding a (very thin) metal piece of the set, when suddenly a crazy Tazmanian named Julius sneaks up behind her and does what a lot of you would probably like to do on a regular basis.
Exhibit C: When well-respected and admired Irish art angers Americans: (This actually has nothing to do with the movie).
This will probably be one of those flims that could either be VERY cool, or exceptional crap (i.e. overly digitized, and therefore lacking in plot and substance). We shall see. Either way, MOMAD was there, and either way, she was most likely a few pints ahead. |

re: Exhibit A-Castle, "It's only a model!" "Ssshhh."
Yes, saw the trailer - this movie looks mod cool. Reminds me a bit of cross between Shadowrun game and Blade Runner. Not that I would compare any movie I hadn't seen to Blade Runner, the early postmodern bombshell that blew the doors off of new cinema. "Home again, home again, jiggety jig." |
