i decided to pull this out of the other thread so we can stop stinkin it up.
no one post picks yet, we still need to finalize things.
i'm in agreement that we should each pick 10 people.
i'm not familiar with the points system, but it doesn't seem like that bad of an idea as it rewards off-chance youngun picks.
then again, points rewarded based on order in list also shakes it up a little, too.
tantrum: I'd say 10..so there's room for obvious choices and longshots picks. Points are earned when your pick dies, you take his or her age and subtract it from 100...right? We need to come up with a fair way to pick also.
as far as a fair way to pick, i'm not sure we can realistically eliminate dupes. i mean, all of us would probably pick the pope at this point...
suggestions?

Sweet. #2 has some good points, including allowing duplicates (because hey), including not posting your picks until submissions are over because you know everyone's going to go shopping on your post.
EDIT: I've already got five picks in mind.

Excellent. I agree, #2 looks best. We'll need to agree on rules (or, Vas can set them by divine decree). Here's my proposal (it's basically from ref #2, but with some of the items I didn't care for removed.)
Rosters contain 15 picks.
Picks are not exclusive. More than one person may have a pick.
You may only pick a pick once.
Please try to identify the relevance of each pick (ie President of Vulgaria, starred in "Beach Blanket Keno" , etc.) and their birthday.
The year ends on January 1, 2006 when the ball drops in Times Square.
Each "hit" is worth a base score of 125 points minus the person's age.
Hits will be counted only in the case of "confirmable" deaths during the calendar year. In order to be considered "confirmed," death notice must appear in a prominent news service publication: cnn, AP, Reuters, ESPN
Picks must be human.
All picks must have some element of celebrity, fame, or political relevance so that an announcement will be mentioned in some credible news source.
None may be currently under a state-mandated death sentence, nor may their celebrity or fame be based primarily on their moribund state or terminal illness.
Bonuses:
"First Blood" - First pick overall to die in the year gets bonus of 25 points.
"Last Gasp" - Last pick overall to die in the year gets bonus of 25 points.
We'll also need to work out a submission process. Should we set a deadline (say, March 28) when all submissions must be posted; and if you post early, you are just a sucker? Or, we could send all submissions to an objective compiler that posts everything at once after the deadline; but I prefer the former, as will the purported compiler.

This is mundar's baby. I say let's let him make any rules that don't involve re-circumsizing me.
We'll also need to work out a submission process. Should we set a deadline (say, March 28) when all submissions must be posted; and if you post early, you are just a sucker?
Sounds good to me.
Or, we could send all submissions to an objective compiler that posts everything at once after the deadline; but I prefer the former, as will the purported compiler.
Let's let mundhra do all the work.

linkswarm needed a dead pool two years ago.
I've been reading about Rotten's dead pool for some more general info on the whole thing. Seems simple enough to set up and run.

i don't think it's necessary to spell absolutely everything out. also? i like brevity.
since i'm responsible, i'm reserving final authority. i don't see myself doing anything other than looking for a consensus though.
these rules aren't absolute law, revisions welcome. ask questions now.
there has been talk of playing this like a real pool where players ante up $5 or $10 each so the winners actually get something. i think this would be really cool, but i wouldn't want it to exclude a lot of people. let me know your opinions on this asap. i will still play but abstain from prize collection if we go this route.
- picks due by 03-31-2005 23:59:59; pool is over 01-01-2006 00:00:00
- pm me with your picks. i will post them here the morning of 04-01-2005. early posting does count in case of a tie or pick worthiness dispute (so you can correct your list).
- each player posts 15 picks; try to include birthdate
- picks are unique per player, but not exclusive
- be creative, but don't go too far out on a limb. if your pick is disputable, provide relevant support for their celebrity or fame
- re-picks may be allowed for disputed picks; stupid picks (already dead) are too bad, so sad
- people on death row or who are famous soley because of their ailing physical state/terminal illness are not allowed
- each verifiable death on your list is worth 125 points minus the person's age
- it is each player's responsibility to bring a death of their pick to attention
- and although it would be fun: you may not cause the death of a pick or, through inaction, allow a pick to die
bonuses:
- if your list contains the first pick to die during the contest: +20 pts
- if your list contains the last pick to die during the contest: +20 pts
- if no one else has listed your pick: +25
ties:
- ties decided by number of picks dead, then by youngest pick dead, then by submit time
clauses:
- don't be a cunt by abusing loopholes, for i wield the mighty mjolnir

Qwerty: The Dumbskull for when Dumbskull isn't posting.
Mundhar, I'll research today and then PM you my picks. As opposed to posting them here in the thread like an asshat what didn't read much of the thread he's posting to.
Obviously everyone's going to pick the Pope. That renders it sort of pointless to do so, doesn't it?
I'm definitely in favor of anteing up 5 or 10 bucks. That makes it worth my while and weeds out joke posts which are only going to cost Dear Mundhra more time and effort.

there should be an 11th pick, a 'wildcard' if you will (ala Hunter S) wildcard winner gets a fabulous prize, like a new oven, or a trip to Italy, or a Big Mac coupon, or something.

This is probably a silliy question - and - if so I'll brace for the glowsticks, but how are we ante'ing up the money (should we choose to)? PayPal it to someone or what.
Grimaceing and bracing now...

I'm in, will PM you my picks in a few days. Maybe we'll have to do the honor system with the money. Those that are not honorable could get banned from ever playing again or something.

it's looking like the ante is becoming popular, but i'll hold off decreeing it for another day or so. i would prefer paypal payment to me by the end of april. this is probably the most important issue at this point; let your opinions be known.
vasudeva: Obviously everyone's going to pick the Pope. That renders it sort of pointless to do so, doesn't it?
or? it is effectively a sort of arms race where you perhaps cannot afford not to pick the pope (especially with the possibility of being the first pick death of the year).
ghost: there should be an 11th pick, a 'wildcard' if you will (ala Hunter S) wildcard winner gets a fabulous prize, like a new oven, or a trip to Italy, or a Big Mac coupon, or something.
you choose 15 picks; your reward is the points you gain upon their death, especially considering the third bonus for wildcards (if no one else has listed your pick: +25).
qwerty: i'd really like you to play (i'd really like your money even more). you've already pm'd me your picks, so it doesn't seem like you need more time researching. pitching in for ante doesn't have to be immediate, so let me know. i'd rather not bump anything back further so we can get this bitch off the ground.
i checked pm's for questions but haven't read any of the lists yet. i'd like to make my picks before checking validity of the lists, so i'm planning to do that saturday with any that will have arrived by then. i think a week is fair to come up with replacements, since you should have a minimal number, if any.

Aw, come on. No need for heavy research. Just list people you know and like. Or people you wish would die. Or the cast of Happy Days. You're likely to have near the same 'hit' rate as anybody else.
