Ok. heres the beef.

either a. my computer seems to be infected with some kind of super-clever virus or b. i'm being really paranoid and/or ignorant.

my brother foolishly opened up a spam message on msn messanger and since then, the pc has been acting up.

i tried to download an anti-virus programme but every time i put a search in for 'anti-virus' or 'spybot' or 'avg' or anything remotely connected with virus protection, the window closes itself down. normal words do not have this effect. its like the fucking thing KNOWS what im doing.

i go on the msn website, the thing lets me look at msn's fabulous, up to date movie news, but if i click on any security options, it shuts me out.

also, it seems to shut itself down even when i try and open a forum topic that offers advice. on linkswarm for instance, i can look at a clip of some guy with a machine gun all i want, but if i click on a link that i saw the other day, suggesting we hijack this new programme, it shuts the window down again.

also, i cant access my hotmail account either.

what the fuck should i do? just reboot the fucker?

Ok, good, so you know what to look for.

It DOES know. It's aware of what you're searching for and is thwarting you based on keyword. Hopefully, it's only doing this through IE, and you can use Firefox or maybe Opera to download what you need to.

Spybot and AVG you already named. I'd add BHODaemon, HIjackThis, and AdAware. Start up in safe mode and run them.

Same thing happened to me.
I could search AVG and stuff with Firefox no problem.

AVG 7.0 works well, but it won't heal some sort of infected .CPY files in C:_RESTORETemp

I don't know any solutions.
But AVG will help.

Oh, if it's the one I got, it's Bropia.A worm.

Try downloading and burning to disc the programs vas mentioned from your friends PC..if you have any friends. If you can get to system restore try to restore it to a time before opening the bug then run your AV. Also try CWShredder to clean out any COOLWEBSEARCH bullshit.

I think your best bet is to go into safe mode and do a system revert. If you can't revert you might be able to run some of your AV stuff. AVG doesn't run in safe mode.

Throw it out in the snow for a while. The cold will cause the virus to hibernate, when you bring it back in immediately hook it up and download the above mentioned programs before the virus wakes up.

Why didn't I think of that. I'll try it next time.

For this reason, I think your problem is spyware, rather than a virus, However you might also want to download and run the Mcafee AVERT stinger - a standalone app that goes after specific nasties on your machine.

You might also like to try Microsoft's AntiSpyware tool (I like it a lot) and a-squared (has a good record against trojans).

Best of luck, let us know how you get on - and when this shit is all over, switch to Firefox ;

ctfmon.exe is a part of the Microsoft Office suite.

svosm.exe looks bad.

So does sysup.exe

sssasas.exe looks bad too.

Take a look at Spybot>Tools>System Startup too, it'll show you what programs are starting up with your computer and tell you what each one does (an advantage over HijackThis). You can then choose to disable any spyware programs from starting up with your PC by unchecking the boxes.

This is useful because a lot of spyware programs run re-installers when your system boots up, so if you delete the actual nasty (even in safe mode), a backup nasty restores it.

Moar luck @ j00.
