I came across this review of Don't Think of an Elephant, which is written in part by the dude who also wrote Moral Politics.
I haven't read any of these - hell, I haven't even finished the review yet - but they definitely pique my interest.
Here's an excerpt from the review:
The key idea he emphasises is that of “frames.” He argues that the Right have mastered the use of frames, and that progressives desperately need to figure out what’s going on or be forced into using their opponent's frames. The title example refers to an impossible exercise. It’s just impossible, upon instruction, to avoid thinking of an elephant. Similarly, when Nixon said to the US, “I am not a crook,” it was inevitable that a huge portion of his audience would think, “ok, you’re a crook then.”
Here’s a more contemporary example. September 11 2001 was, and may have continued to be, described as a crime; a mass-murder no less. A ‘crime’ is a frame that evokes ideas of law, investigation, arrests, courtrooms and justice. It does not evoke the idea of militarily assaulting another nation. But ‘attack’ does, and the frame of ‘attack’ replaced ‘crime’ very quickly after the event. Once it was an ‘attack’ or ‘an act of war’ (however dubiously), there was no need to obey any rules. |

As a psych major with precious few job opportunities, I've thought of involving myself with the study of language in some form around the time that 9/11 happened. The manipulation of language by the Bush administration is downright skillful...essentially bullshit, but skillful. I feel that a major reason that Kerry lost is his inability to find a competent staff that could manipulate political language in the manner that the Bush camp does. This is definitely an interesting looking book, and I had never thought of the subject in quite the way that the author frames it. I might actually buy this book. |

Thats NLP at work baby.
The brain consists of 100 billiards (estimated) neurons and every neuron is connected with at last 10000 others. Which means that every thing is connected.
Think of your last vacation.
Swiiish, there is a bunch of information floating trought brain if you do that, pictures, sound, smells aso.
You can use this while dating girls, if you are that kind of asshole.
Just ask her "Hey i heard Michael Jackson had -Sex- with kids"
While saying sex, her brains thinks of sex, of pictures or events which she knows. Theres a great chance that she will think of
you as a "sexy" guy from now on. Just by using the word "sex".
This is how the brain works.
This is your build-in google search engine, always running as a very important background-service.
The brain doesnt unterstand the terms "not" or "dont" or "no"
This is used in hypnoticing sessions, sales talk, and advertising.
And, sadly, but nevertheless effective, in politics.
Ill once analysed George Bush speech to the nation after 9/11, and ill noticed some very intersting things. Ill forgot about it, damn alzheimer-curing marihuana *g*, but the hard copy lays around here somewhere.
Anyway, i´am able to hypnotice you.
Do you here that? Yea That.
And do you notice this strange feeling in your hand?
The important thing here that the is no specific frame around this.
As you say, "crime", from which has everybody another definition is evil, and thats what counts. Taking Drugs is a crime. So taking drugs is evil.
"This notion that the United States is getting ready to attack Iran is simply ridiculous. Having said that, all options are on the table," Bush said.
Translations are senseless, translations take the power out of it.
The important thing, this what the brains of millionions of americans are receiving when hearing this is:
"This notion that the United States is getting ready to attack Iran is simply ridiculous. Having said that, all options are on the table," Bush said.
Thats just an assumptions, iam still n00b with all this stuff, but i strongly assume that this is real.
