So I may be a dumbass, but it's been a long week and as I've been at my parents house often these past few weeks my brother noticed a wireless network in range but it's encrypted. I tried using that aircrack program, but I just can't quite figure out how to work it. I know I could just ask the neighbors to take the encryption off, but breaking in is just more satisfying. Any help from the folk that have used it?

Sure, I can tell you how to use it. The program works too, I tested it a few weeks back.
First, make sure you have a wireless card that can enter monitor mode. Orinoco and Prism are the two wireless chipsets that can do this. Then, run airodump.exe to collect the traces of packets flying through the air. First time you run it, when you are asked which channels to monitor, enter '*' (I think) to see which access points you have in your vicinity. Pick the one with the highest signal strength (you'll see it on the screen), note the channel it's on.
Run airodump.exe, enter that channel only, and then enter the name of the file which will store the packets that you are about to intercept. You need about 2-3 GB of hard drive space, and about 2-4 days of captured data (depending on how much bandwidth your neighbor uses). All of the packets you snarf will be written to that file you specified. When you have 1-2 million class IV packets (you will see how many you have from the output on the screen), press Ctrl+C to exit the airodump program. Then, drag the file with snarfed packets onto the aircrack program, press '0' when given a choice, and give it some time to mull over the packets and do the cracking.
Then, record the key the program gives you (if it cracks successfully), and enter it into Wireless Connection properties. Beware though, the neighbor's AP can also do MAC address filtering (which restricts the set of computers that can connect to the access point), so in that case you'll be out of luck.
