XFire claims to work with HL2/Counter-Strike Source et al. This is good because Steam's Friends buddylist thing is almost entirely uselessly broken for me. I think I managed to see someone online once, even though the rest of the time we're sitting in IRC going "I'm on, I can't see you. Are you on? "Yeah, I'm on. I can't see YOU." (Etc.)
As an aside, have any of you had problems working with the Friends shit? (Dumbskull, I already know -- you don't use it and never heard of it but you probably have a weak friend-related pun you'd like to wrap some curse words around. Way ahead of ya. ^__^)

Yea, the friends thing almost never works for me. And even if it does, it usually wont work for my friends; therefore, its useless.
If you know what name the person plays under, you can go to http://www.gametiger.net/ and search before you join.
Or, just find a server you like and remember the ip address.
Or, if you are a little more advanced than the average HL noob, set up a ven server and you can actually talk to your teammates regardless of what server they are on.

Friends is laughably broke. It has been since their beta release over a year ago. I honestly can't explain it other than the server that "runs" it is likely overwhelmed or if its a cluster, horridly out of sync.
