I firmly believe that MapQuest is in bed with Toll Hwys!
My experience is with Hwy 407 in Ontario. For a little bit of background, Hwy 407 was built with Taxpayer dollars and we must either rent a transponder and pay by the km. or pay almost $15 every time you hop on it even if just to go 2 exits.
The Ontario Provincial government sold the Hwy to the 407 Corporation who will probably never lower the tolls, when it was our tax dollars that paid for the thing. In fact they are lobbying to gain the ability to raise the tolls without provincial approval.
All that is neither here nor there. My complaint is that when I use MapQuest to give me directions, which put me near the 407, it tells me I have to take it. Even if there is a faster route.
Now if this is the case and they do it on purpose, I don't care, but I want the general public to know this so they aren't unwittingly taking a Toll Route when they don't have to, especially if the alternative is faster.

I have nothing good to say about corporate run roads. That is being proposed where I live and it sucks bigtime. Why does scumbag megacorp aways seem to win? |

MapQuest gave me the wrong directions not too long ago. Not a slower route, but 100% wrong, as in Can't Get There From Here.

Steel, in the U.S., the same thing happened with the NYS thruway. Decades ago (the 1970s?) it was sold under the condition that the private thruway corporation eliminate tolls by 1997. Well, turns out that when 1997 came and went, the thruway corporation said they couldn't conceivably eliminate tolls and still maintain the highway properly. Now, in 2005, they're raising the tolls again on this stretch of interstate 90. I don't know about a mapquest conspiracy, but you can see that big real estate developers are truly conspiritorial.

Toll? Roads?
Don't got 'em here. Instead we pay 50 cents a gallon higher for gas.
