Too old to Rock and Roll...too young to die

There have been two bushfires in my state today, one relatively minor and one much worse. Eight people died in the bigger fire, most caught in their cars as the fire crossed roads.
This brings me to the point of this post. When I was a kid, ( many years ago ), instructions on what to do if you were caught like this were on the TV every fire season, all through the fire season. I haven't seen a PSA of this type for 20 years ( since the last fatal fire ) but I bet they will be back on soon.
My question is this: If you live in an area that has a "seasonal" disaster pattern ( eg tornados, hurricanes, avalanches) do you get PSA's on the idiot box telling you what to do if you are caught in the wrong place at the wrong time or do you have to try to remember from your childhood?
If you have moved into an area with this sort of problem, how do you learn the correct way to save your own life or do you have to use the trial and error method when and if ? If the latter, I wish you luck and will mourn your passing when the time comes.

I have just asked my wife what to do if caught in a fire and she didn't know. She has lived here all her life but is ten years younger than me, so she doesn't remember the ads.

lolz0r I pitty p00r human f00ls who don't know what to do if a fire comes there way.

I thought you had kids man? Havn't you heard of that fire safety lizard that is always trying to flog off fire safety video's... Doesn't the local fire brigade goto the school, during school fete's?

We always get fire safety tips in sydney because of the fires up in the blue moutains every year.

--- fancy that -- After a 1 min search I found the South Australian BushFire survivor tips:

Yeah, I know what to do but there are thousands who don't.

What lizard? That must be a convict state thing.

We don't have that many big fires in the Hills, only four in the last hundred years and I think only one of those was fatal.

Fire Brigades at school fetes is only ever a display or fund raising thing and the fire safety stuff the kids get is more concerned with house fires and escape plans for them.

We both know that the average Joe Slob is not going to search for the information he thinks ( hopes ) he will never need. It has to be rammed down his throat on a regular basis by the only God he will listen to- the one in the corner of his lounge with the big suare eye.

FYI
What to do in case of brush fire:
1-Run in a circle.
2- take DEEP breaths
3-Scream

IF CAUGHT IN FIRE, DRIVING - Shelter in Car

* Don't drive into or near bushfires. If caught in a bushfire don't drive through flames or thick smoke.
* Stop at a clearing or roadside in a low vegetation area. Turn ignition off, and hazard lights and headlights on.
* Stay inside unless near safe shelter. Keep vents, windows and doors closed. Lie inside, below window level, under a woollen blanket until fire-front passes.
* After the main fire-front passes, if heat or fumes inside become severe, get out and move to already burnt ground, keeping your whole body covered.
* The petrol tank is unlikely to explode in the period you need to stay in the car while being shielded from the deadly radiant heat of the fire-front.

This is pasted from the site qwerty mentioned.

Up here in the NE we have this thing called the news and anchorpeople. When ever there's a chance of snow (about the only natural disaster around here is blizzards or the left overs of hurricanes) they just get on air and froth things up to a state of panic like it's going to be the storm of the century so everyone stockpiles canned goods and water and stays indoor. Problem solved.

Yeah, problem with big fires is there is no warning time, they just grow in about two hours from one discarded butt to mountains of fire.

I remember tornado drills and commercials in Kansas being on all the time like they really thought we'd end up in Oz. Also in Texas I remember tornado tips and what to do if there was an escaped convict being on the news.

Are they still broadcast or is this way back in the dim and distant past?

My kids have a koala that comes to the school with the local fire dept. and teaches them what to do in a house fire. This works. They know what to do and want to practice.

I think that the local goverment should remember that just because we live in the city doesn't mean we don't venture into the hills and be at risk of bushfire. They should include all fire risks in their education. I don't remember adverts on the tv but think it is a good idea.

I also live in Adelaide and have friends in the surrounding hills that I visit regularly. I only now know what to do if caught in a fire. Thankfully I haven't had to experience fire.

Maybe Dragon should contact the gov and push them into doing something about it!
