Alllright. I'm moving out to Atlanta to start a new branch of my company in about 3 weeks. I need to start thinking about the computer setup I want. I will need:

1 server (that will probably be used as a work machine also)
4 desktop machines

I need decent hardware, but need to keep it as cheap as possible. Right now i'm perusing the Dell website, but I figured I would check with you all to see if you might suggest another retailer / manufacturer. We will be performing basic office duties (excell, word mainly) as well as powering a fairly intensive industry specific application. Right now my work computer is a P4 1.8 with 256 megs of ram, and it is able to handle everything allright.

I want at least 512 megs of ram, and at least a P4 2.8, unless you guys suggest something better. I want the most for my (boss') money. HELP A BROTHA OUT.

I found this on Dell.com:

P4 2.8 w/ 800 fsb
XP pro
512 ddr2 sdram
17" flatpanel monitor
integrated graphics
integrated sound
integrated 10/100 nic
40g hard drive (7200)
Microsoft Office Small Business
48x cdrw

for $1,062

can i do better than this for this price? If I take off Microsoft Office, it would drop the price to around $800. I won't get that on every machine

I appreciate any advice!!

40 Gig? Dell will usually option up things like that so I would bump that up as far as possible. Otherwise sounds good for an office box.

Atlanta is TEH SHIAT, not just because every street has "peach" in it's name. Seafood rules the culinary scene, and the nightlife is jumpin'. Atlanta is gay-friendly, so take some guns. On the good luck scale you're move is ranked at 89.6372%.

Go Dell. That's a decent price for what you get listed above.

However, you might look into the Dell Outlet. They have many refurbished/remanufactured PCs preconfigured (limited inventory) that sell dirt cheap. Plus, you still get the same warranty as their "new" boxen. THIS IS MY ADVICE. I HAVE SPOKEN. DO NOT EVER MAINTAIN DIRECT EYE CONTACT WITH ME.

Haha. That's just wacky. I need to check if you're ready to expire, cause this is amounting to rape.

Hilarious rape.

40g is enough for me to store all my work data, AND 20g of mp3's. 'tis enough, especially for my slave labor, who will be doing nothing but typing and answering phones all day. God i can't wait to be the boss.

that's not enough computer for me, though. I want at least 512 memory and P4 2.8. I've done a bit a research on these machines (the one listed above) and I think it will fit the bill. It just seemed like more $$ than I needed to spend. I could just build them all myself and make bad ass machines for my boss' money, but he would rather have them built so he can get them supported by Dell or whomever if there are problems.

ANOTHER QUESTION. about a server. I don't know squat about 'em. I am only going to be supporting 4 machines, and the "server" will be the computer in my office.

Does it really have to be a server, per se? and for only 4 other computers, how badass or unbadass would it need to be to be efficient? I don't want a crappy computer, but I also don't want to waste my boss' money on more computer than I need (although I will have a dvdrw drive thankyouverymuch.

tanks!

sorry i'm really new to servers, and don't have much experience with them. I'll try to explain what we use it for. We have a software application that is industry specific that we use on all the machines in the office (5). All the main database information, including critical data is located on this central machine. The internet connection is routed through this computer. It has to be on for any of the other computers to log on to the net or use the associated software. Does that help you at all? We don't have an actual 'server' right now. It's just a p4 1.8 (i think?) with 512 megs of ram. And it does ok. Runs win2k pro.

this computer will have to double as a workstation, and will have to be powerfull enough to handle everything mentioned about and still allow functionality for work, excel, word, and that above mentioned app. (also must be able to surf the LS all the while)

If you're going to use it for critical data I would say *your* machine (being the server) should probably have a RAID array in it. Go with the Dell, it's just so much easier than racking your brain about things.

well, critical data is backed up daily. I'm not really into spending all the extra cash just to have a backup HD. I'll look into it though.
