My shitty hard-drive of 18GB is partitioned for Linux (home and root) and Windows. To actually burn a DVD, I need about 8GB free space, according to all these programs I've been looking at. I don't have this.
If I get an external USB hard-drive, is there any way at all I can make the DVD burning program work on it and make it burn to my DVD ROM? Or is this completely impossible and I should just go cry about it? I think it probably is possible, but I like to get the cold hard facts from the swarm.
I am a technological troglodyte, and I don't fully understand all this jazz.

i really don't see why it wouldn't, but i honestly don't know.
seriously, though, save your money and buy an internal HD. |

What are the advantages of an internal opposed to an external?

Less portable.
More faster.
More physically stable (screwed into the box).
Cheaper.

Firewire would be the fastest, think iomega do some external firewire drives - no idea if it would burn though, google doesn't know shit on this one - see no reason why not, so long as you don't want to write at 8x |

Seriously, go internal. Circuit City just had a 200g internal on sale for like $140 with a $70 mail in rebate. Unless you're editing video and have to bring it to another workstation or have a lot of kiddie porn you need to hide easily if the Feds come calling it just makes sense and is a hell of a lot cheaper. |

Fuck that external HD shit. Buy a Western Digital 80 G HD and fucking install it yourself. They're good HDs and cheap. I bought one for 50 bucks. You can get installation instructions right off the net. Don't buy an external HD, they're expensive and suck.

There is no reason I can think of that it would not work. I do the same, on a smaller scale, with an 20GB external drive and a cd burner. it works fine. obviously noticeably slower than burning from internal and BY FAR the more expensive way to go.
There is only one advantage to externals... they're portable. You give up an awful lot to get that portability. So, you have to REALLY need portability to justify it.
I agree whole heartedly with EVERYONE else here. If it is at all possible... go with the faster cheaper bigger better internal.
