I am looking at getting a PDA, what do you guys think? Right now, I am eyeing down the compaq ipaq 3835 and the HP jornado 568. Both seem to pack a punch and have nice color deals, but I am also considering the release of the intel xscale into the mix. That might prove to be something worth waiting for. 206 mHz vs. 400mHz. My main goal with this sucker is so that I can upload photos with it on the fly. Basically, I want to port a digital camera to one of these suckers and then take the images and upload them to a site via cell modem. So... my question is, should I just wait and put it all into the xscale and see what compaq does with that technology? Might be my best bet. |

I'd look less at mHz and more at expandibility.
In fact, unless I'm just being a real jackass, the differences between handheld A's CPU and handheld B's CPU are as broad as the difference between CISC and RISC. That is, it's like comparing apples and apples.
I got a Palm III for Christmas a while back. Then, some dudes from Palm spun off and started a new handheld -- the Visor. The Visor beat the shit out of the Palm for useability and customer happiness, last I checked, because it had open standards, and thus, anybody in the world could create add-on modules. Within three months of the Visor's debut, it already had eight times the cool gadgets as the Palm has now.
So check for software availability, make sure it has plenty of hardware in/out ports, see how productive and polished the developer community is, and make sure the handheld is built by people who understand the coolness of open standards (or are profligate wizards with hardware add-ons).
Facts not double-checked; Memory leaky; Grain of salt for you. |

I own a Sony Clie S320 that I got for christmas, and shortly thereafter I got the Jornada 568. I love the Jornada...except for some minor bitches. It has a problem with dust particles under the screen, the sound is somewhat crackly, and handwriting recognition is god-awful compared to the Sony. But, when you factor in, for $600 (when I got it), it's an mp3 player, voice recorder, picture viewer, decent web browser, *outstanding* book reader, and lots of shit to tinker with. Lotta bang for your buck. Never really messed w/ an Ipaq, but I just don't dig the style. Doesn't look like something I'd want to grip onto for long periods, too many wierd edges 'n stuff. |

I looked at the HP one, but I still think that the xscale is the main reason to get one of those handhelds. Plus, there seems like more of those all n one supersmall computers are coming out, like the OQO and others. I would like to have something witha bit more storage space and if I could do graphics on it, it would be a better replacement for a laptop. Well, we will see. I mean, it all comes down to the good american dollar. |

Just heard a rumor that, due to the HP/Compaq merger, the Jornada will be discontinued before long anyways, so might be a pointless factor to consider. I just bought a laptop anyways...so I've been putting some serious thought into selling my Jornada on Ebay or whatever. |

If you're going to get a PDA, drop some money on the pimp shit: HP 5400 series. Biometrics, wireless LAN, Bluetooth, even a fucking TV remote. x-scale 400, 64mb sdram, 48 mb flash. tight. |

Hellz yeah man.. i would love to go all out. BUT i am noticing that there is too much novelty involved in it. I think I would rather have a nice machine to do dev work on. BUt who knows, maybe i will win the lottery.. or just invest in some magazines. :} |
