Someone talk to me about receivers. I don't know motherfuking shit about home audio.
My current setup is like 20 years old: separate receiver, EQ, etc. It's lived a good and productive life, and now I think it's time to stab it in its fuck.
My EQ is starting to pop and crackle in a really maddening way unless I turn off the EQ boost shit and let it just passively push audio into my receiver. Last night me and the LBP were like pissed-off sled dogs in a barnyard ruckus trying to watch Collateral off my XBox, so it seems I have to replace it. (Collateral's good, by the way.)
It also seems that nowadays most non-audiophiles don't really buy separate EQs, so perhaps what I need to do is just buy a decent receiver.
This is where you come in. I don't even know what to look for.
I'd like it to have a remote, have plenty of inputs, sound good, and not be crap. I'm not aware of any needs I have as far as SPDIF (whatever teh fuk that is) or optical or anything nutty, but if you know of some huge benefit I'll get out of something like that, let me know. My setup now has quite a bit of RCA cable, except for a few component and s-video cables coming out of my Myth box + XBox + DVD player.
ROCK OUT.
EDIT: I'm looking at $300-$400 as a financial sweet spot. I am broke. Thanks.

"My EQ is starting to pop and crackle in a really maddening way"
You might solve the problem by opening the EQ box and spraying the mechanical connections of the eq sliders with compressed air. I think the crackling thing is sometimes just dust in the mechanism. Or sometimes the capacitors and whatnot are all old and shit, in which case just fuck it with a chainsaw.
"This is where you come in. I don't even know what to look for. "
1. DON'T buy Bose. That stuff is WAY overpriced.
2. I believe Arcam makes nice receivers. Information and Reviews That sounds like it might cover all your bases. Their recievers seem to start at $1200.
3. Optical connections are supposed to be good for something, but I don't know much about them.
4. EQ's aren't necessary or good in my humble opinion. They are just more components to gum up the works.
5. Audio Asylum is an audiophile forum where you can ask questions and get answers (sometimes even good answers.) Leave a post about your price range and requirements and you may get some helpful ideas. You will be surprised how whacky audio people can get. I shit you not, some people will pay thousands of dollars for things that raise speaker wires of the floor becuase somehow the floor interferes with the audio signal. Take it all with a grain of salt.
6. Oh, and Audiogon is similar, but the quick shop area lists stuff like dealer demos that are slightly used but sell sometimes for large discounts.
Have fun, heh heh.

Onkyo nr801 Is what I have, definately happy with it. It does the whole surround sound mumbo jumbo, can play in two different rooms, streams net radio and mp3's, + all the hookups.
I'd go for optical connections and component video. Even if you don't use it now, someday you will. Also, make sure whatever you pick has an AM/FM reciever.
I wouldn't buy from Crutchfield.com, those guys are f'ing slow from what I've seen.

Pioneer has been good fer the last 20 years ( they were crap in the early days)
Taking the cover off and blowing ithe dust out is always the first place to start unless you really want something new. Taking the EQ out of the loop is an option as well.
Get a Dolby 5.1 or 7.1 channel surround amp/ reciever and where possible use the SCART sockets for connections 'cos they leave 2 or 3 big cables instead of a dozen or more single wires lying around / tangled up behind it.

Shit. The link I posted earlier is dead. Try this one. I couldn't find a real good breakdown, but ghost, if you'd care to bend your mind against this Sony vs your Pioneer, that'd be wicked awesome. And remember I'm an idiot.

ok, keeping in mind I am far more idiotic than you could evar be, let's begin...
both run 8 ohms, fair enough, the Pioneer has a two co-axial input, along with two dedicated audio and two dedicated video(you're a gamer yes? I am not, but i see nothing wrong with that) the Sony has three dedicated input that are only Sony compatible(sorta a Mac trick, eh?). Now, the Analog-Digital conversion on the Pioneer means no matter what you're listening to/playing, it's gonna sound like Mr. Thomas Dolby designed your system. S-video will be important to you, yes? Pioneer has your back on this. you can add whatever you own to this reciever, AND you can add phono...Sony?? NOT. Both are fine, but from what i know of you and your slippery ways, you need an expandable unit(i said unit). I can go forever on this, but i won't. Keep this in mind (sorry for this discredit, Dragonstaff) in my basement studio, i have my original Pioneer reciever i bought in 1983-84. I record my songs on an even older TEAC reel to reel, and playback through my reciever and original speakers. It sounds as good as my living room system.

p.s the only people who don't need EQ are people who listen to exciting music like Matchbox 20 or Sugar Ray

Ghost, I am happy to be proven wrong on this. It is a fact that up to that time the only Pioneer stuff we got was car audio and they were so proud of it that they gave a ONE MONTH warranty, that was only good if the unit was still in it's original packaging and unopened. If you got better stuff, and you obviuously did, I will be guided by your greater experience. The newer, household equipment we get now is certainly the bees knees. ( best)

I've been keeping an eye on this thread because my husband's been researching recievers for about the last year. He vowed to buy one after Christmas. He just walked in the door with one under his arm and announced that I didn't have to buy him any Christmas presents. He is hesitant to tell me how much it cost. I'm kinda afraid to ask. I have not researched it either. Can one of you tell me on a scale of 1-10 on the pucker scale how much this is going to hurt?

i don't know, I have bought Pioneer componants that crapped out a few months later, but overall, I have been extremely happy. I think every brand will have the occasional lemon. I've convinced myself that I can hear the difference in sound on various rigs. Sony Walkman(original) was, hands down, the best sound i have ever heard, but I wouldn't own their products now if they were free. Like any Music Nazi, i am rabidly brand-specific, which means i just might be full of shit. I just calls it like i sees it.

i do have 8-tracks, I also have a lesser known format, a 4-track player(circa 1976) the cartridges looked exactly like 8's . I have only found 1 in my whole life, Beatles 'White Album', at a yard sale when i was in Jr. high
