Ok, let me preface this a bit. My current ISP is a locally run cableco that offers some pretty high-quality cable modem service. Always up, always fast. Recently, they've instituded bandwidth caps (maximum amount of GB transferred a month). We currently have the premium service which allows for 12gb a month of transfers. The CableCo has usually called us when we've gone past this limit to "warn" us. No penalties, no speed reductions, and no charges.
Fast forward to work today: At my office, we also use the business class cable service from the same cableco. I recieved a letter from them today saying they've now doubled overall speed but are now charging for extra bandwidth used above the cap (our cap at work is 150gb a month). They say that if business customers go over thier cap they'll be charged $5 per GB. No biggie, we never get near 150 a month at work anyway.
I get home today, and check out our stats for transfers at the house...

I've hit the cap already and its only the 5th. Now, I'm just hoping that they havent instituted this gay-ass cellphone plan style policy on the residential users.
Any suggestions or alternatives? I can't stop using bittorrent, I'm horribly addicted.

It could be worse; you could be using SmegAdelphia who suspend your internet service for a month for the use of foul language and threats of bodily harm to other forum members. As far as I know they do not have a monthly cap on bandwidth.

Damn are you downloadin DVDs? I dont know what my Charter Cable BW limit is but then I've never checked. Had Adelphia in Florida and no BW warnin for them either.

It probably makes sense from their standpoint, but as a bittorrent-lovin fool, it puts your ass up between a cock and a hard place.
Mofo's suggestion is good. Also mundhra's. Find some DSL users in your area and ask them about caps.

It's not like you're gonna pay if your job goes over the limit. Unless their actually smart and realize that most companies don't jump up hundred gigs at a time. |
