dinozoa's journal: Life is Hard
On Friday night my hard drive started making awful noises. By Saturday night, the motor had fried to a crisp. I replaced it for around $250, $150 for a new hard drive, $100 to pay somebody to put the hard drive into the computer and try to mount the old one. Unfortunately, the repair place doesn't have the equipment to scan a hard drive that's motor is broken. I need the super-duper FBI scanners. Companies that provide these services usually charge > $600. I don't have anywhere near that kind of money, especially since I just spent another $900 on a new desktop computer (cheapo iMac.) Also, the only thing that's worth anything to me on my computer is my 26gb music collection.
dinozoa's journal: Home brew (the new one)
I brewed up some beer about a month ago. It is ready.
It starts today right? Or tomorrow.
dinozoa's journal: best homebrew yet
The end of the summer is approaching so I was looking forward to throw together a really light ale, something without much body that should be served really cold. I decided on a Belgian Wit, which is a style of wheat beer that is very light and has some specialty ingredients thrown in, traditionally orange peel and coriander.
dinozoa's journal: advanced homebrewing
This christmas break I'm going to have some free time, so I was interested in trying to brew beer from scratch, mashing the malted barley myself to extract the sugars, and then making wort from that. Does anybody here have experience with this? It doesn't seem very difficult, just very tedious, but it's a nice feeling to make something from scratch, and I think learning to mash my own grains will come in handy if I want to do more advanced recipes. Any advice is appreciated.
I have a new philosophy in homebrewing of avoiding trying to design recipes to emulate specific beer styles like pale ale or stout or whatever. This is mostly because I suck at emulating beer styles. I tried to make an IPA recently and it came out tasting like a pretty good PA. I tried to make a stout and it tasted like a porter. I tried to make a Belgian Wit and it tasted like something good but it didn't taste like Hoegaarden or the storebought stuff.
