Just as there have always been madmen who commit atrocities, there have always been madmen that use those atrocities to push an authoritarian agenda.

To have no discussion would be even more of a tragedy.

Given the dismal American attention span and the seemingly epidemic rate at which these atrocities at least appear to be occurring, I find it reasonable to have this discussion now.

To characterize an attempt to address an urgent public safety issue as "pushing an authoritarian agenda" is disingenuous. "Agenda" suggests a plan already created and ready to set into motion, and "authoritarian" is a pejorative term that can be applied to anything anyone feels oversteps the bounds of reasonable regulation.

Speaking of reasonable regulation, that you've offered no criticism to what I cosider to be reasonable regulation (in the other thread) is telling.

Banning any weapon will not make this kind of act go away. By any outlawing of weapons we would be bandaiding the issue rather then the root cause of the shootings in the first place. Placing some limit one one weapon will cause the individual to use another form of a weapon(s) and likely a plan based around that.

While its a wild thought, imagine if this person had silently gone around and stabbed everyone to death with pens and pencils. Would we have to ban pens and pencils? I guess we could go back to coal for writing. Knee-jerking Shock-reaction bans will not solve the problem.

We had one massacre of this type back in the 90's. Our government did the knee-meep reaction and banned automatic and semi-automatic weapons (including pump-action shotguns), and tightened up already tight licensing laws, including storage requirements, on everything else, and we haven't had another.

We haven't really had anyone go postal since them either. Our bad guys tend to be outlaw bikie gang related, and they try to keep it in the family.

It is hard to tell that the tightening of gun control is what actually caused the reduction from ONE massacre.
