I'm Sick Of Pretending: I Don't 'Get' Art

I have a number of artist friends. Luckily, they actually make cool meep, so I don't have to pretend to like it.

Years ago, an old rich alumni donated a whack of paintings to the college I work at. I was tasked to hang the art works under the guidance of a couple of profs. They oooed and awed over them while they laid out the very precise locations of each piece. I noticed that one of the abstract paintings wasn't signed on the front of the canvas so thought meep it I'll hang it upside down and see if anyone notices. I'm guessing that was at least ten years ago and nobody's said word.

I peddle my ejac-art photos on eBay. I think they are intelligent, thought provoking pieces in the jizzascura style.

couple years ago i was at the art gallery in brisbane, and there was a featured work, it was a film entitled "pushing a camera down a hill", and it was exactly what it said it was.

I'n my opinion, Warhol excelled at self promotion. Most of his meep was just a copious NY slow meep.

Being good in business is the most fascinating kind of art. Making money is art and working is art and good business is the best art.

If you can create something that will enrich people's lives, make it cheaply and quickly enough to be affordable to everyone and still maintain some semblance of the "soul" of your art; my hat's off to you.

its always a nice ego stroke when someone likes what you've done. My wife paints, but only paints for herself. I love her work, and maybe she really does care that others like it, but she always asserts that she doesn't care whether anyone else likes it. Then again, she's not selling any of it.

I can only speak for myself, but if i'm going to throw my soul up for the world to critique, I'm gonna make damned sure it's something with a wide appeal.
Ceramic figurines and a kid's(I HOPE that was a kid) watercolors just don't mean anything to the people who don't know the touching stories behind them. -And those stories had BETTER be good.
"Topless chick on a horse"...Okay, I'll give that a moment of my time.
"Retard on a lawn chair out in the middle of nowhere"...Yeah, moving on.

At the end of the day I think it's about engaging your audience with universally appealing(or at least noteworthy)artistic skill, storytelling and above all...energy.
"Energy" being a very focused love of what you do that makes people want a taste of it.
Good artists CAN be suffering souls. It's okay to let that show. It's where a lot of the energy comes from, after all.
But to be TRULY GREAT, you have to love your audience as much as you love yourself, putting THEIR desires up on the same level as yours.
-Meaning you have to temper the things you're passionate about with a schoolteacher's patient, nurturing attitude.
You want them to feel welcome. To step inside your heart, have a seat and learn how incredibly fun/strange/interestingly tragic is is to be YOU.
