I read about this about a year ago, or maybe saw something on TV. If I remember correctly, the scientists couldn't figure out a way to drill into the "lake" without contaminating it in some way. There could be life forms in there that have been living in their own environment for millions of years, and one little microbe from a drill bit could start a chain reaction that would upset the balance of the whole ecology and destroy it. Or, there could be something in there that could be very toxic to people, and a plague will be unleashed that will wipe out humanity. Both scenarios are pretty remote, though I'd prefer the latter.
