Still have this on VHS. Love how the guys feels like a lazy piece of meep because his cabin wasn't up in 4 days.

Great movie! The timber he is using looks very easy to work with.

saw this on PBS a few years back at like 2 in the morning rolling home all hammered. dude was so cool I stayed up and watched the whole thing.

I have not seen this in many moons. Wish I'd followed suit.

That meeping door hinge he made....No, none of us could do this.

I bet Wotak could whittle one.I bet Spankercheif could eat boards and meep one.

I'll follow Spanky into the wilderness any day. Wotak is too full of hate to do any good. I'd bet Fastlane could provide a supper or two..

I've hunted game, tanned hides and cured meat. I've grown potatoes, okra, corn, peppers, radishes, onions etc. I've carved out my own spoons and bowls and built all sorts of furniture. I've built lean-to's and weathered a (mild)winter in the canyon. I've spent months isolated from all of humanity in..well okay admittedly noisy and annoying teenage-version of commune with nature.
But I had to find the skills myself over the years and there wasn't any real flow or concept as to what it was leading to.
I swear that if I had seen this at eighteen (and had any concept of what lay ahead in my life), I would have sat at the door to that man's cabin and begged him to teach me the way to live that life he lived. To be so at peace with the world and take joy in the little everyday tasks that make it livable.
It made me happy to see him cut up that caribou into workable chunks for the small animals to carry away and safely feed on. I wouldn't have thought of that.
He CARED.
And JEEBUS meep that man had STAMINA!
Did anybody else take in the INSANE amount of work this guy was doing? He had it all so organised it's pretty obvious that this whole thing was years, if not decades in the planning.
Building it all from scratch. Ripsawing boards LENGTHWISE ...BY HAND... for planks?!!
Yeah, he had a buddy bringing in some supplies every now and then, but he really didn't need much.
What an awesome way to spend a retirement!

But sadly, I don't think there's a place left where you can stay without trespassing, or cut down that many trees, or find water clean enough to drink out of the stream bed.

Anyway, I like my power tools and warm showers...
