In Defense of Flogging

No punishment is as easy or seemingly satisfying as a physical beating. I learned this not because I beat people, but because the good citizens I swore to serve and protect often urged me to do so. It wasn't hard for me to resist (I liked my job, and besides, I wasn't raised that way), but I agreed that many of the disrespectful hoodlums deserved a beating. Why? Because, as the old-school thinking goes, when people do wrong, they deserve to be punished.

I agree 100% how can a time out work for everyone? It does not work for my kids. Sitting in a corner does nothing but give them both a chance for a nap. Prison is the same as a time out in some cases. Beatings work!

Personally, I'd rather be beat with a tire tool than spend another 3 years learning right from wrong.

Of course the lash works. The pain is secondary to the public humiliation as far as having a lasting effect of deterence.

Wait until your drunken cop dad beats the meep out of you because you "might be a bum" at age 4. That works really well.

That is when the drunken cop needs to be tied to a tree and given a dose of the cat.

Not talking about lasting harm, just a little (ok , a lot ) pain, for a short time. The public humiliation is the real punishment.

Public humiliation is definitely the real punishment. In middle school I descovered I could get things for free by taking them for other kids. My mom caught me stealing $50 from my cousin, then sat me in front of her and my aunt and forced me to apologize for thirty minutes. I will never, ever steal anything ever again.

But this guy is just an authoritative meep. His ideas about punishment and rehabilitation are overly simplistic. His diction implies that he's intelligent enough to devolop a moral theory that's more complex than "I assert that rehabilitation doesn't work because that's what I believe, and the issue is black and white, so the only alternative if capital punishment and only capital punishment." He's obviously using post-hoc rationalization to justify what he's comfortable with emotionally.

Someone take the pen out of his hand.

Having lived in this particular neighborhood for a decade or two, I'm beginning to think the middle easterners have the right idea.

The writing is meep. Also, he's quite transparent about the fact that its just a cheap excuse to talk about the prison-industrial complex. Fine, public shame is effective, but this guy is stupid. Paper-thin ideas looped together with a provocative title.
