Agent Dodson and other sources say the gun walking strategy was approved all the way up to the Justice Department. The idea was to see where the guns ended up, build a big case and take down a cartel. And it was all kept secret from Mexico.

The pro-gun lobby argues that the ATF had an agenda to "prove" that American guns are being bought from local gun stores and then trafficked into Mexico to be used by the cartels. That may or may not have been the objective of the ATF but arresting those breaking the law certainly didn't seem to be the mission.
Everyone knows that it is indeed American made weaponry that often is used by these insane cartel hit men, but they certainly aren't getting grenades and fully automatic battle rifles from gunshops in AZ or Texas, which is the type of meep they are finding.
A few hundred semi-auto rifles really isn't meep when you have fully auto M-16 with grenade launchers and such.
