At least one-third of college students -- and maybe more -- wrongly believe that something such as rays or waves go out of the eyes during the act of seeing, according to a new series of studies.

But something does come out of your eye during vision, or else we wouldn't need red-eye correction, and retina scanners wouldn't work, and raccoon eyes wouldn't light up just before you run them over. Reflected light leaving through the pupil is incidental to vision, but it does occur during vision. Given the wording of the multiple-choice sample question sited, I think maybe some of the college kids were taking this fact into account.
